Young Careers in Dartmouth & District: Opportunity, Community and a Better Work–Life Balance
A
ttracting young business people is key to the future of our town, yet for many young people in our area the thought of
building a career comes with plans to leave South Devon behind. Larger towns and cities may offer a wider range of jobs, training and networking opportunities, but research by Dartmouth & District Chamber of Commerce has highlighted that exciting careers can be developed here – and the opportunities are growing.
The results challenge the idea that the area is only suitable for seasonal work or retirement. Feedback from young business people here demonstrates that people can start businesses or develop professional careers here, they can also return from working elsewhere with valuable experience or create flexible working lives through working from home.
suitable for working in, and the pleasure of finishing the day already surrounded by the scenery and community they enjoy. Rather than spending hours commuting, they can step straight from work into the landscapes, activities and social life that make the area feel like a permanent holiday.
They also describe Dartmouth as friendly, caring and supportive, with a close-knit community where people encourage local businesses and new ideas. Everyday connections – from meeting people in the street to getting involved in community groups – can become valuable opportunities for collaboration, mentoring and networking.

Some have moved to the area, or back to the area, because an excellent opportunity arose. Others have chosen Dartmouth first and then shaped their working life around the place they love. With remote working, entrepreneurship and flexible employment becoming increasingly common, it is now possible for more people to build successful careers without sacrificing the quality of life that makes South Devon special.

The report also acknowledges the challenges. Young people may leave to gain qualifications, experience or specialist skills that are not immediately available locally. However, leaving does not have to mean leaving permanently. The skills acquired elsewhere can be brought back to Dartmouth, helping individuals find work, launch ventures and contribute to the area’s continuing growth.
The message is clear: Dartmouth is not simply somewhere to visit; nor is it where you CV hits a dead end; instead it is somewhere to establish a future among a welcoming and supportive community, in a beautiful environment.
That quality of life is one of Dartmouth’s greatest advantages. Respondents talked of morning walks and swims, independent coffee shops
For anyone considering their next step – whether starting out, developing their career, returning home or seeking a healthier balance between work and life – the opportunities are here. The invitation from the Chamber is simple: look closely, get involved and go grab them.
A video report has been shared with local schools and colleges, to encourage our youngsters to consider the opportunities here.
