54 Advertising feature Antiques Roadshow days I

am often puzzled (disappointed?) that after 14 years as a regular on the Antiques Roadshow, I

have been recognized by strangers just three times. I clearly have a forgettable face -maybe a good thing, given that it is viewed by 5million people every week! This year we filmed at Dartington, and it was extremely pleasing whilst there to keep seeing Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood clients, and they actually did recognise me! Some had used the business as a one-off, perhaps for probate or insurance work, whilst others were ongoing clients with a real interest in antiques and fine art. I was tickled that these people, with whom I have dealt professionally and know- a-bit personally sometimes too, had come along to the Antiques Roadshow, and would see me doing my ‘other thing’. I am often asked by clients whether I enjoy the

Roadshow filming days. I explain that it is immensely hard work, with little or no breaks, and that it doesn’t really pay for the Winter Caribbean cruise. Ultimately, it feels good to be a part of something bigger, I like

meeting the constant stream of people in the queue, and there is also the addictive sharp feeling of being in a hunt, for that special, special piece. And that brings me neatly back to

Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood, because the valuation days that we hold all over the South West really do have exactly the same format as the Antiques Roadshow recording days - only without the TV crews, 5 hour queues, first aid tents and battlements. (Although on reflection, there are battlements at Tavistock’s Bed- ford Hotel, where we are regularly). The Kingsbridge event, every other month at Harbour House is firmly established now and attracts a strong base of repeat clients who trust us with realistic valuations based on genuine knowledge and experi- ence, which as a larger firm with specialists

in every discipline, we can give. There is a decent café across the landing from us too, so some clients make a morning of it, meeting friends for a cake afterwards. Do come along to the next one (17th November) and join the merry throng! CRISTIAN BEADMAN, Chairman, Head of Furniture, Works of Art Department and Valuation Services
