Seasonal notes
●Resist the urge to snip dead seedheads – teasels and grasses etc make good winter fodder for birds.
● Check bonfires for hedgehogs who might be hunkering down for the winter season.
● Embrace the longer night skies and try to reduce light pollution where possible in order not to in- terrupt the natural rhythms of wildlife. Devon Dark Skies Fortnight: 16 October – 1 November
● Deer rutting season typically peaks in October so look out for stags battling it out to find a mate.
● It’s hooting and honking season for owls who are a mainly nocturnal species. Listen out for Taw- ny owls defending their territories with the young going off to find their own space to call home.
Be Wild @ Dartmouth Food Festival – 25 October This local community network will be exploring the question – how much does our food depend on the natural world? Expect hands-on activities and lots more….

Last chance! Seed gathering season officially ends 21 October. As long as it’s not too wet or too cold this is the perfect time to sow wildlflower seeds. After watering the seeds will germinate and go dormant waiting for the warmer weather in spring before they grow again.
