simpler to buy air tickets that feature “interlining” between a full-service airline and a low-cost carrier by enabling third-party integration. “It will also equip TMCs with the ability to create more airline offers to better serve their clients,” he explains. “One Order will increase the productivity of travel agents as they will only have to deal with one single document and not reconcile all three.” Hoyles believes One Order will also improve the productivity of buyers by providing better data about exactly what’s being spent with airlines, including ancillaries. “You can see all the services on that record so you get more
data that buyers can use to negotiate and optimise their travel programmes,” he says. So what’s the timescale for One Order? Hoyles says there are pilot projects planned for 2019 and 2020 before “true deployment” in 2021 and 2022. “We believe it’s important NDC and One Order come sequentially and the speed of integration will accelerate,” he explains. “Potentially from 2021 onwards, more and more airlines will be deploying NDC and One Order together, and they will converge into one programme.”
In the meantime, what should buyers do to make sure their voices are heard as One Order is being developed – particularly
over the thorny issue of who foots the bill for the project? Nina & Pinta says: “Across the
board, there was a willingness to accept a slightly higher cost of sale for a better experience. No one was willing to take the brunt of the costs and the general feeling was that the costs should be spread across the industry.” The white paper stresses
the importance of buyers getting involved to help shape One Order – this is already happening with IATA running two advisory groups of corporate buyers in Europe and the US where One Order has been discussed.
