RECIPROCAL PASSPORT CONTROL So would EU citizens still be allowed faster entry through our passport control gates? (UKinbound gets behind Brexit deal, buyingbusinesstravel.com). Assume we, however, would not be permitted to go through the EU channels when we travel to EEC countries. That’s not a great welcome given the delays that may occur. Our inbound short-break market could take a hit, if that’s the case.

ABBA FAN Ten years ago a new [World Traveller Plus] seat was launched to great fanfare – it’s still not available on many routes (British Airways reveals upgrades to premium economy, buyingbusinesstravel. com). In 2019, the BA service is degraded, uncompetitive and dirty (because cleaning cabins costs money and £1.7 billion profit doesn’t come from nowhere). No doubt some routes, including Heathrow to JFK, will receive this change on the dates stated, bringing them close to the service offered by Lufthansa, Singapore or Virgin Atlantic, but the reality is this is another example of a BA bait and switch... Announce and promote one product and deliver another from another era. Let’s not even start with BA’s version of “customer service”. Simply, if you want comfort, service, or value #flyABBA (anything but BA). Journeying John (via BBT website)

PHONING IN I fly London-NYC regularly in World Traveller Plus and maybe 30-40 per cent of the time get a seat with a TV the same size as my phone. Some of the cabins look like they’re from the 90s. It’s so hit and miss.

IN IT TOGETHER The interesting detail about this investment is that [American Airlines] is also already a shareholder of China Southern (Qatar Airways acquires stake in China Southern, buyingbusinesstravel.com). It would be interesting to hear how experts judge this

move as Qatar Airways and American Airlines are having a big dispute. Qatar Airways even threatened to leave Oneworld because of American Airlines’ (and Qantas’s) opposition within the alliance. So how do we understand that both are now investing in China’s largest airline?

MISSED OPPORTUNITY What a huge mistake that with all the over-runs on this project, there is still no mention of a station to connect with London City airport (Crossrail ‘costing £30 million a week’, buyingbusinesstravel.com). A massive opportunity for some basic joined-up thinking totally missed!
