HOSPITAL DESIGN

Concept sketch.

The urban planning of Lúcio Costa’s Pilot Plan ensured the availability of land suitable for the construction of a hospital of this magnitude, capable of accommodating a program of significant scale and architectural quality. Lúcio Costa’s vision in creating the Pilot Plan not only considered the city’s expansion but also foresaw the need for high-standard healthcare facilities that would seamlessly integrate into the urban environment. This resulted in the availability of suitable land for the construction of a large-scale hospital, capable of meeting the healthcare needs of the community with excellence and providing a prominent architectural environment.

Project conception The initial concept aimed to craft a lengthy, linear structure punctuated by subtracted sections at its core, giving rise to open courtyards interspersed within the building’s fabric. Externally, it adopts the appearance of a horizontal hospital typology, suggesting a monolithic hospital structure. However, it is only when one steps inside that the true nature of this building is unveiled – an intricately designed, uniform structure that masterfully optimises natural light, ventilation, and airflow through strategically placed apertures. Despite its apparent simplicity, it stands as a testament to meticulous organisation within a high-density framework, adhering rigorously to a precisely modulated grid. The architectural design further divides

the structure into three longitudinal sections, cleverly facilitated by two spacious circulation areas. These well- conceived courtyards represent the pivotal element in our approach, transforming them into therapeutic green sanctuaries where patients, visitors, and the healthcare team can immerse themselves in nature’s soothing space, finding tranquillity, relaxation, and rejuvenation. This was a key conceptual element to the design process of the project, from the concept to the materialisation.

From the main street, it is possible to see the green terraces.

To enhance the human experience within this healthcare facility, we have integrated green rooftops throughout the project. These luxuriant enclaves provide ideal settings for social gatherings, meetings, and moments of rest. They double as vantage points, offering breathtaking views of the majestic mountains, giving patients and visitors a tranquil escape into the scenic beauty that surrounds them. This harmonious blend of nature and architecture presents physical healing and nurtures the spirit within these healing walls. With this horizontal typology, the maximum amount of natural light and ventilation was taken advantage of – another strategy to promote the comfort and well-being of future hospital users.

Urban integration The New Barra D’or Hospital is strategically located in an urban area of great significance, enjoying proximity to important public and private facilities, which promotes strong integration and remarkable ease of access to its location. Situated along the bustling Ayrton

Senna Avenue, the Via Parque Bus Rapid

Transit and System station stands out as one of the primary connections for the public seeking access to the Hospital. The presence of this station adjacent to the building, along with its connecting skywalk way between the two spaces, significantly simplifies access to the New Barra D’or, ensuring an efficient link between public transportation and the hospital facilities. To the north, Nelson Mufarrej Filho

Avenue provides a direct connection for both vehicles and pedestrians, linking the Hospital to the renowned Via Parque Shopping. This offers New Barra D’or users the convenience of easy access to a wide range of services and amenities found in a large shopping centre. In addition to these advantages, the hospital is conveniently situated near the Península neighbourhood, a significant residential complex in the region of Barra da Tijuca. Furthermore, it benefits from its proximity to others prominent commercial centres such as Casa Shopping, Barra Shopping, Via Parque, Village Mall, O2 Corporate Offices, and CEO Offices, making it a preferred choice for meeting the medical and healthcare needs of the community.

The main access reveals a huge glass structure on the façade that gives an idea of the importance the hospital.
