ENERGY

In recent years, there has been a trend in healthcare estates to replace steam systems

and its heat transfer capabilities, it is only necessary to control the pressure. That means the use of a simple 2-port valve rather than the mixture of 2 and 3 ports normally associated with liquid heating systems are not required. This may reduce installation and maintenance costs.”

The flexibility of steam When the latent heat capacity of steam is used in a heating process the condensate is reduced in volume by approximately 1,700 times. This condensate requires little energy to return to the boiler house. Steam systems are thus very flexible. Steam provides a means of transporting controllable amounts of energy from a central, automated boiler house, where it can be efficiently and economically generated, to the point of use. Steam is inherently sterile. The rapid

transfer of heat it gives when condensing is the reason why it is such a common means of sterilising not only surgical instruments in a steriliser, and surgical gowns in an autoclave, but also pipelines in essential industries such as food or pharmaceuticals. Being a sterile gas makes steam an ideal choice to humidify air in ventilation systems. This is why it is commonly used in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, and electronic industries where clean, sterile, and humidified air is required Centralised boiler plants can take

advantage of low interruptible gas tariffs because any suitable standby fuel can be stored for use when the gas supply is interrupted for example gas oil, or heavy fuel oil.

Conclusion Steam is an integral and essential part of the modern world. Steam is used in a huge number of processes across industries as diverse as pharmaceutical, food and beverage, textiles, pulp and paper, oil and petrochemicals, laundries, and public buildings. It is the primary medium to produce electrical power in power stations be they coal, nuclear or Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) systems. In conclusion, without it, our food,

textile, chemical, medical, power, heating and transport industries could not exist.
