FOREWORD
Time to share knowledge of healthcare engineering Steve Rees
It is hard for me to believe that a year has passed since IFHE 2022 in Toronto, Canada. During this past year, it has become more apparent that there has never been a more crucial time to share information and knowledge of healthcare engineering around the globe. I attended conferences in San
Antonio, USA (AMFP), Toronto, Canada (Greening Health), Winnipeg, Canada (CHES), and Manchester, England (IHEEM). In all these conferences, the themes and topics were timely and relevant. Of course, climate change, decarbonisation, and pandemic design changes were very hot topics, but so many more were also relevant and extremely critical to IFHE members. Some of these topics of focus were deferred maintenance, governance, patient safety, lifecycle costing, facility commissioning, sustainability, and private financial initiatives or, as we call them in Canada, P3’s or Private Public Partnerships. The global relevance of these topics
demonstrated the importance of sharing information not only through each national organisation but worldwide. That is where IFHE plays a huge part whether it be through our website
www.IFHE.info, the IFHE Digest, our newsletters, the IHEEM Quarterly Journal or other ways through our global network. No matter where we are in the world, we all have similar challenges and can certainly learn from each other. In the first year of my presidency, we
have faced a huge challenge with our banking situation, but we are working with our secretariat, IHEEM, and slowly correcting the situation. I thank IHEEM and our Treasurer, Matthias Schwabe, for their ongoing support in this endeavour. Our Communications and Marketing Working Group, led by Douwe Kiestra of the Netherlands, has worked hard to improve communications with our members. An increased number of newsletters with more focused content has helped in this regard. We have also concentrated on improving our website.
Steve Rees is president of the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE) and the former chief program
officer of Capital Management at Alberta Health Services. He is a certified facility manager, holds three trade
certificates, and is a graduate of the University of Alberta’s
construction administration
programme. He has worked in healthcare facilities management
for over 40 years and is a past president of the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society.
This initiative is now in progress thanks to our General Secretaries, Darryl Pitcher and Gunnar Baekken. Vice Presidents Kevin Poggenpoel and Walt Vernon have initiated interviews with A Member Associations to obtain their input on how IFHE can provide more value to our members. A check in with members to assure we are doing the right things and to find out how else we can benefit the IFHE family. Kevin and Walt have also initiated a strategy session at our next in-person meetings in Mexico City to review our action plans. Fabio Bittencourt of Brazil has led an initiative to produce recorded webinars, and we have the first few now on our website. As we move into year two of my term,
I look forward to our meetings in Mexico City 4-5 November at the 19th International Congress, Transversality in

Health Infrastructure. There we will confirm IFHE action plans for the short and longer term. I also look ahead to more interviews with A Member Associations. And, of course, I am excited about attending the 28th Congress of IFHE in Cape Town, South Africa, on 15-17 October 2024, including our presentation of the International Building Award and Global Carbon Reduction Award. Our continued work with the World Health Organization (WHO) on various initiatives is also very important to me. The latest effort is recruiting volunteers to be part of a IFHE – WHO team of reviewers of WHO’s new Guide to Climate Resilient, Low Carbon Healthcare Facilities. In conclusion, I thank all of IFHE
Executive Committee, Council Members, and members at large for your dedication to your profession in healthcare engineering. You play such a huge role in the delivery of safe efficient patient care worldwide!
