interactive and help to create a clear goal map – they can be personalised by clinicians as well as quantified, allowing patients to see their progress, which helps to motivate recovery. Patients are encouraged to be more active and they feel more empowered. “Using motion tracking sensors to gamify physical therapy, the technology also serves as an ideal tool for therapists. The exergames can be tailored to patients’ needs and conditions and the device comes with assessments and questionnaires to help keep track of patient activity and performance. “Our goal is to motivate people to get better in a faster, easy and fun way. We believe that ‘exergaming’ can help patients recover quicker and in a more rewarding way, whether they are recovering from surgery, injury, or have a long-term condition.” MIRA is the company’s core product. It has been successfully used in orthopaedic and neurological therapy for children and adults, and has also been shown to be effective in falls prevention and active ageing programmes for the elderly, helping to improve balance and mobility. Cosmin continued: “Due to the varied content and exergames, MIRA has been used by patients starting from there to 102 years old. It provides the means for patient treatment at home that allows a permanent connectivity with the clinic. “The application is constantly undergoing feasibility studies, randomised control trials
and research projects. It has been designed, developed and optimised based on feedback and clinical research.”
Gamifying healthcare
Gamification is an exciting landscape within the traditional world of healthcare and physical therapy. Whether it’s counting your steps per day or getting paid to walk, the use of data and technology can help to provide
the motivation we need to change our behaviour and improve our health, adding an element of fun to things that would otherwise feel difficult to do and maintain. Technology has long been thought of as a distraction, but in the world of physical rehabilitation it can also serve to distract from pain, turning exercise into play.
