Completing a Trust-wide installation
The Clinical Services Journal examines how Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is completing the Trust-wide installation of endoscope washer-disinfectors.
When Sandra Marshall, endoscopy matron - Trust-wide, knew that Northumbria Specialist Care Hospital, Cramlington, was taking the steps to creating an endoscopy department in that facility, she knew that there was a specific requirement for a machine that would be appropriate. The Trust already had experience of
Wassenburg having installed one of the company’s pass-through endoscope washer- disinfectors at North Tyneside urology in April 2014. “All the manufacturers gave us their information,” said Sandra. “James Doherty, the capital sales area account manager with Wassenburg, invited us to a facility where their machines were installed, so that we could speak to the staff there about their experiences and the reliability. It was Barnsley Hospital. “James left us alone so that we could ask the staff there anything - breakdowns, reliability, service. They were really impressed with the machines, and hadn’t had any problems with the Wassenburg washers. “After that and speaking to the operational
service manager and general manager, we decided to go with Wassenburg. We went ahead with an order for one machine for the new hospital at Cramlington in May 2015. It

was installed and performed very well.” Sandra explained: “The initial plan had been to replace the washer-disinfectors at North Tyneside, but then, around September 2015, the old machines at Wansbeck General Hospital broke down and were found to be beyond repair. They had been breaking down regularly and were no longer fit for purpose. At that point we had no pass- through. Wassenburg and the trust had to re- prioritise and switch attention t installing an interim unit at Wansbeck. “North Tyneside General Hospital took on all the reprocessing for Wansbeck, with the scopes having to be transported to and fro,

the 17 miles between the two hospitals. We also utilised the washer at Cramlington, processing volumes that the single machine was not used to, but the unit and service from Wassenburg ensured that any downtime was kept to a minimum. “It went smoothly, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the staff. They decided to change their shifts around and came in early and worked late to enable us to process the additional scopes, on top of their already busy daily workload.”
Updating endoscope reprocessing
All of the endoscope washer-disinfectors were aging, apart from Hexham, where Wassenburg installed a single WD440 top loader to provide contingency as the old equipment was failing. Sandra said: “We had to look at what we needed to do for Wansbeck as a matter of urgency. North Tyneside General Hospital, Hexham General Hospital and Berwick Infirmary had relatively new machines in comparison with those at Wansbeck, but we had no pass-through.
