ENDOSCOPY “We saw this as an appropriate
opportunity to update our endoscope reprocessing and locate the new machines in a pass-through facility. We set up the ‘Task and Finish Group’, chaired by the director of estates. Our task was to decide what we were going to do, how we were going to do it and what equipment we were going to choose.” Sandra noted: “As we’d had no problems with the machine at Cramlington, the logical progression was to speak to Wassenburg and see what they could do for us. “Wassenburg quickly came up with an interim measure to help us until we found a permanent solution. We stripped-out Wansbeck’s old machines and Wassenburg installed a free-standing pass-through washer in their place with reverse osmosis water treatment. The machine has two baths, so it could process two scopes independently. It was up and running in April 2016. The plan being we would relocate and re-install in Alnwick, which had an old and failing washer. “Then it was decided that Wansbeck would have a new endoscopy facility on the site. It was to be located in the old obstetrics theatre which already had a suitable airflow system. “Wassenburg worked closely with our estates team on the project, regularly attending site meetings. It all went very smoothly, the installation and commissioning. The scheme there was completed by September 2016 with five Wassenburg WD440 PT endoscope washer-disinfectors installed, each able to process two scopes independently.”
Because all the Trust’s scopes are logged onto each machine across the Trust, the scopes will all go through all of the Wassenburg machines. This provides uniformity and flexibility across all the sites.
Training and development
All the training was delivered by Wassenburg’s product trainer, Jonathan Franklin, who explains: “I set up Process Manager, our tracking and traceability software, and trained the administrator. “Process Manager is synchronised across
Loading the scopes is a straightforward process
all the Trust’s sites. It covers every machine, every scope and every operator. The scopes and operators can go anywhere in the Trust. At Northumbria Healthcare NHS, for example, there are 200 operators and 800 endoscopes. All machines talk centrally to the computer. You can log onto the system from anywhere in the trust and locate scopes. “The administrator adds any new scopes onto the system. We can dial in through Process Manager and help them through it, if necessary, using our secure connection. “Once Process Manager was set up, I delivered the end-user operator training on the machines, training the technicians how to load and unload the scopes, the chemistry, how to hang the scopes in the drying and storage cabinets, and when scopes are safe to use, the three-hour rule. “I also trained the Trust’s estates engineers on how to undertake the weekly engineer testing, how to do the automatic control test, weekly water sampling and new process challenge device testing. I also showed them how to compile the results and store them, so that when audited by the AE(D) they know where they are. We have bespoke training documentation.” Considering the Trust’s multi-site location and high number of mobile staff, James Doherty, Wassenburg’s capital sales area account manager, said: “The training Jonathan delivered has enabled this project to fly.”
Keeping track of processes
Process Manager enables Sandra Marshall to monitor the location and progress of all scopes trust-wide, even when they are moved from site to site

Now that all sites are fully operational, Sandra asserted: “The staff like the machines, they’re easy to use and have been reliable. They have RFID. They have bar codes. Each stage of the process is scanned through. It’s an efficient, 23-25 minute cycle. “With Wassenburg’s Process Manager it’s so easy to keep track of the scopes processes, so all new equipment can provide the data around the whole of Northumbria trust. When we get a loan scope in, we can add it to the system. Process Manager allows us to do that. “We already had Process Manager with the machine installed earlier at Cramlington. The estates engineers there use it. They were trained so they can pick up a fault. It saves
