Wassenburg being called out as they can access remotely for any fault diagnosis, which helps us avoid any delays. “Wassenburg programmed all the scopes
onto Process Manager and did all the training for the staff. It was in-depth - excellent. The staff were certificated for the training.” Sandra explained: “One of the things the
Task and Finish Group stipulated was that ‘we should have flexibility in the system trust-wide’. The Wassenburg washer- disinfectors do that. “We were already planning a new standalone endoscopy facility with pass- through for North Tyneside, but at the time we hadn’t specified the equipment. The decision was that the new facility at North Tyneside would be equipped with Wassenburg. This was intended to be the first unit to be completed before the Wansbeck site. “North Tyneside went live in October 2017 with five Wassenburg WD440 PT machines. We’re currently reprocessing the scopes for endoscopy and urology.” According to Sandra, one of the machines at Hexham General Hospital was no longer fit for purpose, so a Wassenburg top-loader was installed. “At present they have only the one machine,” she explained. “The plan is that the top loader from Cramlington will go to Hexham and a pass-through will be installed at Cramlington, in order to ensure clean and dirty separation. “At Alnwick Infirmary we had to put in a new machine as the old machines were no longer being supported by the previous company. So, as we had planned, a Wassenburg pass-through was installed there in April 2017. “The Task and Finish Group decided that, whatever was chosen, we should install the same machine throughout the trust. Our staff move around a lot, from hospital to hospital, so it made sense for the same equipment to be used. Besides efficiency and ease of use by the staff, it was a safety issue as well. We didn’t want different machines with different chemicals. There are no health & safety issues with the chemicals with the Wassenburg machines. “It has worked very well from a
partnership point of view, we’ve a really good working relationship. Simon Smith handled the installation and projects for Wassenburg, while James Doherty has been very helpful throughout the process - pointing us in the right direction. We still meet up with James to hold regular review meetings to ensure all is going smoothly. “From the servicing point of view, the
Wassenburg engineers always find the most convenient time to attend. This isn’t an issue at North Tyneside or Wansbeck as each has five machines. Servicing and support have never been a problem. It’s all good. “We’ve found the machines are very reliable. The helpline has been very supportive whenever we’ve needed to call. If there’s been an issue, they will suggest how

to solve it or have an engineer on site very quickly.” Process Manager is now in place at each hospital, and all the scopes are on the system. At any time, the system can be accessed Trust-wide, so users can see which scopes are being processed - and at which hospital. This means that if a scope is required at another site - for example, if one has had to go for repair - a suitable replacement can be located and sent over. Because all the Trust’s scopes are logged onto each machine across the Trust, the scopes will all go through all of the
Wassenburg machines. This provides uniformity and flexibility across all the sites. Sandra concluded: “On a daily basis we can process anything from 80 scopes, if all of the lists are going on all of the sites. Since we installed Wassenburg there have been no delays to lists. As long as the machines are running the smaller facilities keep up with their intended workload. “The larger sites at North Tyneside and
Wansbeck, which each have five machines, are JAG Accredited. At present, the others have one machine, but Hexham will have two by the Spring of 2018. “The unit managers of the various sites are in charge of decontamination as well as looking after the department. The staff are working in procedure rooms and on other days in reprocessing. On a daily basis, staff are allocated to the reprocessing facility or endoscopy procedure rooms. It makes their role more interesting. In times of sickness or holidays we have more staff who can work in each area, either assisting in an endoscopy procedure or reprocessing scopes. “We have Wasenburg drying and storage cabinets at Wansbeck and North Tyneside. Scopes either go into a tray if they’re due to be used within three hours or they go into the drying cabinet. All these machines are also connected to Process Manager software to further monitor the scope journey. “Working with Wassenburg has been a really good partnership. They’ve been really helpful and the machines have proved to be reliable. “After originally seeing the installation at
