Critical power protection solutions on show
Kohler Uninterruptible Power (KUP) will be demonstrating its medical IPS, UPS, critical power back-up, and emergency lighting solutions for healthcare environments. The company’s Medical
IT system product (MIPS) is designed for operating theatres and intensive care units, fully meets the requirements of HTM 06-01, and integrates with KUP’s UPS systems and range of compact, quiet, and efficient generators used in hospitals. KUP said: “Customers can thus now use one expert supplier for purchasing, installing, commissioning,
and servicing – and one that understands power systems, back-up, and redundancy, and how this relates to HTM06-01 guidance.” KUP will also be offering
information on its upcoming free Healthcare UPS Academy in Birmingham on 13 November. The free- to-attend half-day CPD seminar covers the design and compliance of UPS and secondary supplies discussed in HTM 06-01, and has been developed for healthcare estate engineers or engineers working with critical power within healthcare environments. KUP also offers the course at customer sites.
Sustainable, energy-efficient products
Toshiba Air Conditioning, which will be exhibiting at Healthcare Estates
2024, says it offers ‘sustainable solutions integrating energy-efficient products for residential and light commercial customers’. The business is part of Carrier Global Corporation, ‘a global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions that matter for people and our planet for generations to come’. Toshiba staff will be at the event talking about their broad product range, and discussing the brand new high-capacity heat pump, the USX Edge.
Protecting patients from airborne contaminants
Pressure stabilisers listed in HTM 03-01 are a key component of air distribution in operating theatres, helping to protect patients from airborne contaminants. Apreco says its VARI-centric balancing system accurately controls the differential air pressure between adjacent rooms. Positive pressurisation of operating theatres protects from the ingress of infectious agents passing through open doors, by providing high air volume rates as detailed in the HTM guidance. Pressure stabilisers control the pressures of the rooms with the doors closed, and shut off when a door in the suite is open, thus diverting the air for protection.

It should be noted that HTM 05-02 states that the fire strategy in operating theatre areas should not be at the expense of ‘cleanliness’ – an obvious challenge when you incorporate fire and fire smoke dampers in a wall.”
