How the AE service has


benefited Health Boards As well as providing centralised engineering expertise, the AE service has standardised the audit approach across all engineering disciplines. A standardised approach simplifies the process, and reduces the time that Health Boards need to develop and implement effective action plans. Consistent reporting and streamlined processes also enable Health Boards to respond more quickly to emerging issues, improve how


they allocate resources, and enhance operational efficiency. Engineers within the NHS Scotland Assure


AE service also proactively engage with Health Boards to safeguard patient and staff wellbeing, through their involvement in ventilation, water, and electrical safety groups. This kind of engagement reduces the likelihood of incidents, whilst supporting compliance with regulatory requirements. When incidents do occur, the AE service supports Health Boards to investigate, identify the root causes, and implement preventive measures, contributing to a safer healthcare environment in Scotland. The AE service also provides educational


Beattie, Principal Engineering Manager, NHS Scotland Assure, is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, the Society of Public Health Engineers, and IHEEM. He is also a member of the Water Management Society, and is a registered IHEEM Authorising Engineer. He has extensive experience in mechanical and public health engineering systems, including in design, risk assessments, Clerk of Works, technical advisor, undertaking investigative reviews. and incident reporting for all stages of a project’s lifecycle within the healthcare environment.
