Traditionally this month, Manchester – and IHEEM’s annual flagship conference and exhibition in particular – are the meeting place for many of the most influential and aspiring professionals working in healthcare engineering and estates management, and the associated construction and product supply chains. Healthcare Estates has indeed become an extremely popular and well-attended event – not only providing conference delegates with a chance to hear presentations from senior and well-respected industry figures, but also giving exhibition visitors the opportunity to see and hear about a wide range of new products, technologies, and services. While sadly the COVID-19 pandemic has made staging the physical Healthcare Estates event this year impossible, IHEEM and Step Exhibitions are holding a series of webinars featuring key speakers and up-to-the-minute topics under the banner of Digital Week from 5-9 October – don’t forget to register for what should be some fascinating presentations (see page 8). Over the past six months, IHEEM’s Head Office team has been busy ensuring that members can keep in touch with news and industry developments via regular newsletters. Recognising the even greater importance of an effective ‘web’ strategy in an increasingly digital age, the Institute will this month launch a completely re-designed and re-vamped

Hygiene, safety, and ergonomics are fundamental requirements of any mixer installed in healthcare settings. Delabie says that its new Securitherm EP pressure- balancing mixer, 2447LEPUK, ‘provides engineered solutions to deliver these three essential elements on a daily basis’. The body and spout internals are designed to hold very low water volumes, and fewer components are in contact with the water. The smooth interiors and low capacity tubes reduce the build-up of biofilm. The spout is fitted with a flow straightener rather than an aerator, which creates a mix of air and water, and which is a potential source of bacterial growth. The Securitherm EP mixer features a pressure-balancing (EP) cartridge which compensates for pressure variations in the system, ensuring a stable mixed water temperature at the outlet. The EP cartridge also has a pre-set maximum temperature and an anti-scalding mechanism, which reduces the

flow at the outlet to a slight trickle if the cold (or hot) water fails. Securitouch thermal insulation also ensures that the narrow internal tubes do not come into contact with the external surfaces, so the mixer body remains at an ambient temperature.

Available with a Hygiene control lever, the Securiterm EP 2447LEPUK mixer can be operated by people with reduced mobility. The longer Hygiene lever offers a hands-free alternative to further reduce the spread of pathogens.

The increased spout length guarantees optimised handwashing, while an increased drop height reduces the risk of bacteria splashing back from the waste or drain onto the spout.

IHEEM website. Not only – (see this month’s Institute News) – will it be easier to navigate, but it will also offer significantly greater functionality and more comprehensive information – including on membership and registration, upcoming events, IHEEM’s Authorising Engineers and Company Affiliates and their areas of expertise, careers in the sector, the Institute’s Diversity & Inclusion work, and a Learning Hub which IHEEM says will ‘bring together everything we offer in terms of knowledge, information, training, and career development, for existing and new members’. In tandem with the new website, IHEEM has further developed and significantly extended its training offer, with for example, the launch of a new Healthcare Facility Planning Course, greater focus on mentoring, and new Assessor/ Reviewer training to teach members how to assess professional registration applications by looking at qualifications, experience, and CPD, against the required standards.

All in all a clear demonstration of IHEEM’s determination to significantly enhance and broaden the benefits of membership, and, equally, to reach all those working in the sector who could both benefit from its expertise and resources, and give something valuable back.
