HEALTHCARE ESTATES 2020 SHOWCASE A plumbing ‘game-changer’
Water Kinetics describes its Eco-Duo system as ‘truly a game-changer in the world of potable water plumbing’ – not only, it says, does the system save 50% of energy costs, but it also ‘halves all the fixings, the insulation, and the time and costs of installation’.
The company explained: “As a one pipe system, it is simpler and easier to install, and any requirement to cut the piping once it is installed is done using the traditional method currently used by plumbers. Eco-Duo brings the circulating water right up to the point of use, eliminating the possibility of deadlegs,
Doorsets to afford independence
Safehinge Primera says that ‘together, we design for good’.The company elaborated: “We listen to experts with lived experience, clinicians, estates teams, and architects, to truly understand their experiences of mental health environments and the impact of good design. With 90 per cent of inpatient suicides tragically occurring in either the patient’s bedroom or bathroom (46 per cent of which occur using the door), our purpose is to help protect those going through a vulnerable time. We strive to balance safety with privacy, dignity, and independence, by designing doorsets that are:
and thus resolving one of the main causes of waterborne pathogens within potable water systems today. This benefit, added to the stability of temperature, goes a long way in the fight against all waterborne pathogens, including Legionella.
“Our Continuous Isolation Valve, meanwhile, allows water to keep circulating around the system even when the water supply needs to be isolated, while our unique Confluence T fitting allows Eco-Duo to be fitted to all types of heating or cooling devices, and fits to current tap and shower configurations.”
The perfect pairing
n Thoroughly tested to the highest ligature reduction standards.
n Easy and non-restrictive for both patients and staff to operate.
n Non-institutional, to help create a safe space for recovery.”
Solutions to problem of hospital noise
‘Both research and experience tell us that hospitals are noisy places, and are becoming noisier’.
So says manufacturer of acoustic products, Ecophon, which adds: “Whilst the noise sources are numerous, they can be broadly split into three categories – technology, verbal communication, and logistics. The hard, smooth, sound- reflective finishes used to aid cleaning exacerbate the noise challenges. “This sound environment has a considerable impact on both staff and patients,” Ecophon continues. “Swedish research found that by changing the
room acoustics from poor to good by using an Ecophon sound-absorbent ceiling, staff felt less stressed, and had more autonomy over their work, and more time to spend with their patients. In surveys, staff attitude was graded better by patients, and the overall hospital quality of care rated higher. For patients – many stressed and vulnerable – low noise levels can positively affect rest, anxiety, sleep, perception of pain, and length of hospital stay.
“Much can be done to improve hospital ward room acoustics. A Class ‘A’ sound-absorbent panel (absorbing between 80% and 100% of the sound that hits it) can help. By installing this on the ceiling, a large and relatively unused part of the room is utilised. “If cleaning is a barrier to sound absorption’s use, Ecophon can help. Our Hygiene range of ceiling products has been developed for healthcare spaces, and includes systems suitable for use with HPV, disinfection, and wet environments.”
Franke Sissons, which has produced and supplied commercial washroom products for over 200 years, and Dart Valley Systems, which claims to have been ‘a market-leader’ in water-saving products and automatic washroom solutions for over 35 years, have united. Together, both brands form Franke Water Systems, which can provide a washroom solution ‘with the capability to cover some of the most demanding environments’. Key markets include mental healthcare, healthcare, custodial, and other public and semi-public washrooms. With ‘state-of-the-art’ manufacturing facilities in the UK and Europe, Franke Water Systems says it has ‘the capability to deliver standard, customised, or fully bespoke results for any project’. With ‘the look, feel, and usability of products in healthcare facilities key’, Franke’s Miranit composite basins and troughs are seamlessly moulded to help eliminate biofilm build- up. The Planox stainless steel troughs are seamlessly welded via a laser, with a tapered bottom to aid water flow to the central waste. Also available are premium DocM Packs with Miranit basins. The DVS branded range of healthcare spouts – including EZ, Aquaritherm, and Medi-spouts, offer non-touch operation. The Medi-spouts come in four colours, ‘promoting a quarterly cleaning regime, and encouraging excellent hygiene and easy maintenance in healthcare environments’.
