Strengthening connections with Branches prioritised
As part of IHEEM’s response to the new ways of working during and post the COVID-19 pandemic, Head Office will be hosting a new monthly webinar with a specific IHEEM ‘Branch of the Month’ – to provide updates for both individual and Company Affiliate members. The webinars will be delivered via the IHEEM website, and will be live, but will be recorded, and available via the Learning Hub for IHEEM members only. Each Branch, supported by the Head Office, will provide an update on current and planned activity, as well as taking questions and discussion topics from members who login to the webinar. They may also provide technical presentations by Branch members. All sessions will be CPD certified.
Tania Davies, IHEEM COO, said: “Head Office is committed to strengthening its connections with each of our Branches, as well as improving our overall communication with our membership, especially during and post COVID-19 in
what is now being deemed ‘the new normal’. Members will now be able to safely and conveniently engage with Branches, and find out how each one of them is working to support the Institute and our membership.”
Marketing & Events Manager, Melissa Glass, said: “The first webinar with the West Midlands Branch is scheduled for November 2020, followed by the Yorkshire Branch in December. Further information will be provided in a rolling calendar created by the Institute later this year. In the meantime, we are seeking members’ views on the most appropriate time to hold these new Head Office/Branch events, and would appreciate your feedback, so please have your say by clicking the adjacent link to indicate your preferred timing. Problem-solving challenge for aspiring engineers
IHEEM is delighted to announce that it will be an IET Education Theme Partner for the 2021/22 Faraday Challenge. Based on a real-world problem, the Faraday Challenge brings together STEM subjects in an engaging way, and
encourages the development of young people’s problem- solving and communication skills. It is open to anyone between the ages of 7-15, and young people can take part at home, or in school – either individually, or as part of a group. Individuals or teams will be assessed on their ability to plan and develop a product, use their STEM knowledge effectively, and demonstrate the skills required to work effectively in the world of engineering – including teamwork, flexibility and adaptability, resilience and perseverance, budgeting, and communication. Winners of each ‘theme’ will receive a £10 voucher for themselves, and the top five teams from across the UK will compete in a National Final for a prize of up to £1,000 to spend on STEM products for their school.

IHEEM will contribute towards the £25,000 funding for the programme, and is currently working with the devolved administrations to devise a valid problem, specific to healthcare engineering, that the young competitors will seek to address.
Paul Fenton (pictured) said: “In my current role as Vice-President of IHEEM, and as a Director of Estates and Facilities in the NHS, I understand the importance of investing in and
encouraging young people
into the world of healthcare engineering. Indeed, I intend to make Future Leaders one of the key themes during my forthcoming IHEEM presidency. This initiative clearly supports the successful work already undertaken by our STEM Ambassador, Monira Kaouech, over the last 12 months, as well as supporting several of the Institute’s core objectives outlined in our Five-Year Business Plan. I very much look forward to seeing what these aspiring engineers of the future produce, and to sharing the solutions they propose.”
