INSTITUTE NEWS

March 2009; revised April 2012, EngC weblink updated 2018).

The Head Office team is ‘particularly excited’ about the new ‘Future Leaders’ section on the IHEEM website; it will include case studies from healthcare engineers and apprentices on their own personal career journeys.

on standard and non-standard routes. Soon we hope to be able to publicise work experience opportunities for people within the industry who would benefit from management experience within our sector.”

Diversity & Inclusion

The new ‘About Us’ section within the Diversity and Inclusion page of the new website, meanwhile, highlights what the Institute is actively doing through its Diversity and Inclusion Committee, as well as providing useful information and resources for our members to read in their own time.

Learning Hub

The new IHEEM Learning Hub brings together everything that the Institute is offering in terms of knowledge, information, training, and career development, for its existing and new members. Some of the new training opportunities on offer are outlined later in this article.

Pete Sellars said: “The Learning Hub is also where visitors can stay informed with the latest Technical Guidance and industry news. Members will also find content exclusive to them, including our new International Healthcare Facility Guidelines, which offer an array of information regarding the operational management, planning, briefing, design, and construction, of healthcare facilities. These guidelines place emphasis on achieving quality patient outcomes which reflect international healthcare practice in a safe and appropriate environment. They represent patient-focused, research- based, modern and efficient planning principles. This valuable content will be made available for free to all IHEEM members and Company Affiliate members. A suite of professional estate management software packages, and targeted CPD training packages, will also be available through the IHEEM Learning Hub. This is an exciting time for all our personal and company members, and the Head Office team, as we rapidly deliver a number of our key objectives for our five- year vision and business plans for the Institute."

Melissa Glass, IHEEM Marketing & Events Manager, said: “We hope that

website visitors and all our membership will see the vast improvement in the website, and will take full advantage of our new and improved features. I would invite everyone to stay connected with the Institute, and visit our website frequently, so they can see the progress we are making – both in terms of its development, but also the content therein.” Visit www.iheem.org.uk

IHEEM training courses and career development Pete Sellars said: “The Institute is committed to providing the right training events and resources to members to enable them to broaden their knowledge and skills and allow them greater opportunity to maintain their CPD. We are now putting in place a structured programme of training courses and events to support members in their career development, as well as offering opportunities for members to engage more closely with the Institute. Wherever possible, all training courses and resources will be CPD-certified, and you will be able to record your CPD through the new bespoke CPD system outlined below.”

The Institute recognises that there is no ‘one size fits all’, and that individual journeys are different, and hopes that this opportunity will help more future leaders succeed – by having direct contact with and guidance from those who have been successful in their own career path. The mentor training will be carried out in partnership with Eastwood Park, and is due to start later this year. The course will be recognised by both City and Guilds and the CPD Certification Centre. IHEEM mentors will be expected to commit to mentor at least one individual per year.

Healthcare Facility Planning Course IHEEM has partnered with TAHPI as one of the Institute’s knowledge partners to deliver this certified CPD course, which aims to introduce the specialised aspects of health facility planning and design to candidates with an interest in developing their skills to take on infrastructure projects in the public and private healthcare sectors. Pete Sellars, IHEEM’s CEO said: “Healthcare Planning is one of the many essential responsibilities that our personal and affiliate members actively lead or engage with within their roles as healthcare professionals. The current need for all healthcare organisations to identify future healthcare requirements at a strategic level – both nationally and locally – as part of future capital investment plans, has never been more important. I am proud to launch IHEEM’s first interactive CPD-certified online training course. This internationally acclaimed programme firmly establishes the Institute’s commitment to support the development of healthcare professionals to better understand the complex journey of Healthcare Planning.”

IHEEM Coaching & Mentoring Programme

The Institute is about to launch an exciting new opportunity that provides training for appropriately experienced members to enable them to support other members through their journey of applying for professional registration via the non- standard route for Incorporated or Chartered status with the Engineering Council. A mentor is defined by the IET as ‘a suitably experienced person who is willing and able to provide help and guidance to enable a Candidate to recognise their own development potential, encourage them to realise it, praise when it is achieved, and challenge them to do more’. Harnessing evidence-based research This course is intended for professionals who are already experienced in related industries, but lack the specialised knowledge required for healthcare planning design. The overall aim is to provide an overview instruction on using evidence-based research to improve a healthcare environment, and master how to handle change leadership, stakeholder management, and strategic alignment with organisational goals, when planning and designing healthcare facilities. The presentations are designed to offer relevant and up-to-date information to assist all those involved in working in health facilities or health services in remaining competitive, knowledgeable, and an expert in the field. The medical basis for the concept categories is introduced, along with design and construction strategies to create healthy buildings.
