A ‘customised, business-friendly’ schedule
The course spans over nine days (35 hours) in ‘a customised business-friendly schedule’ that allows students study time and minimises absence from employment. An online exam and an assignment are conducted at the end of the training, and the student will receive
a Certificate of Continued Professional Development (CPD) following successful completion.
New IHEEM Assessor/ Reviewer Training
Following extensive consultation with the Engineering Council, and beginning in November 2020, IHEEM will be running courses for new assessors / reviewers. The aim of this initiative is to teach members how to assess professional registration applications by looking at qualifications, experience, and CPD, against the required standards. Following training, which will be CPD certified, new assessors will be required to assess a minimum of two applications alongside experienced assessors prior to being able to assess independently as part of a member application. All assessors will be invited to observe the applications going through the Membership and Registration Committee approval process, providing further governance around the Institute’s processes and procedures. Karen Casey, IHEEM Membership Development Officer, said: “The Institute is continuing to receive a steady supply of membership applications, so there is a real need to expand the pool of assessors and reviewers. Offering training to those who would like to support the Institute in this role will be really beneficial, both to the individual and the Institute.” In addition, all existing IHEEM assessors are about to undertake refresher training in line with the new Engineering Council Competency Specifications published in September 2020, which stipulate that this must be carried out by an assessor every three years.
Members will, for example, be able to record a CPD entry and categorise it under a distinct type of learning, and upload attachments to a CPD activity.
IHEEM Professional Registration Interviewer Training
Working actively with the Engineering Council, this independently certified CPD course will be launched in early 2021 to members that have been active in the assessor role. This training covers the skills required to participate in conducting a structured interview for a professional registration candidate. Individuals will learn how to question and interrogate the work of potential registrations, as well as to look at the skillset of the potential new members, and come to a rational decision supported by evidence. Following interview training, individuals will be required to observe two interviews as part of the panel, before they can join the panel as a member.
New bespoke CPD system In line with its Five-Year Business Plan, IHEEM is committed to offering its members relevant and current CPD activity, in addition to simplifying and automating the CPD recording experience. This has resulted in our new bespoke CPD system, which has been tailored to both members’ needs and the requirements set out last year by the Engineering Council. The new system is fully integrated across the new website, and accessible via your MyIHEEM account. Engineering Technicians, ICT
Technicians, Incorporated Engineers, and Chartered Engineers, are required to maintain their competence through CPD, and record that development accordingly. Each professional engineering institution undertakes annual random samples of registrants’ CPD records, and provides appropriate feedback. Recording of CPD has been mandatory for registered engineers and technicians since January 2019. Professionally active registrants who persistently do not respond to or engage with requests for CPD records from a Licensed Member risk removal from the Engineering Council Register.
A bespoke system
The Institute’s new bespoke system enables members to capture their learning to meet these mandatory requirements of the Engineering Council. It is simple to use, and has been designed for mobile optimisation, which is becoming ever more important to users. Tania Davies said: “A key benefit of the new system is that it allows you to capture and maintain your CPD record in one place, while allowing third parties to confidentially review and comment (but not change) via one or more unique links.” In addition, the new system allows members to: n Record a CPD entry and categorise it under a distinct type of learning.
n Upload one or more attachments to a CPD activity, including PDF files, Word documents, photos, or even small videos.
n Upload a photo on a mobile device. n Record activity and mark as complete. n Link the CPD to a competency standard and run reports.
n Set an annual target, and record actual hours and/or points.
n Receive notifications of uncompleted CPD and regular statements of achievements against targets.
n Update CPD during live IHEEM CPD events.
n Select pre-loaded IHEEM CPD events to load and populate details automatically.
n Upload historical CPD. n Keep MyIHEEM personal information updated.
The new bespoke system enables members to capture their learning to meet mandatory Engineering Council requirements.
Pete Sellars concluded: “I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has contributed to all this fantastic programme of work so far. We are currently developing a calendar of targeted training courses and events that we will publish in November’s HEJ and on the website so that everyone can see the forthcoming dates and plan and book them at their convenience, so please stay with us as we embark on this new and exciting phase for the Institute.”
