On July 30, 2020, Monticello learned of the existence of the Betsson Chile website, which offered sports
betting, casino, live casino and virtual sports to the
general public. This website constituted: “A true online
licence process several times over the years. With the government now looking at expanding the industry, it was arguably only a matter of time before the land-based sector moved against new plans for expansion.
In March, Te Monticello casino operated by Dreams, filed a complaint in the Prosecutor's Office, accusing Betsson of breaking the law. In mid-June, the SJC indicated that they were already conducting an investigation and that they had forwarded the information to the Public Ministry.
Dreams also criticised the organisational body for professional competitions in the top two leagues. Te increasing presence of betting companies via sponsorship deals means that as many as 22 sports betting and online casinos that operate in Chile are now investigated by the Public Ministry.
So, while the government may be looking at opening up the market to online operators, there could still be a while before it is actually up and running. Either way, the market still offers considerable opportunities.
A number of questions remain unanswered too. Will an online expansion be followed by land based sports betting? Will it encompass only casino games, sports betting or both? Will Chile open up the market to retail sports betting as well? We talked to some of the leading operators and developers to find out more.
