he progress toward smart fac- tories, intelligent, adaptive production lines, and automat-
ed supply chains is picking up steam. Whether we call it IoM (Internet of Manufacturing), IoT (Internet of Things), IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things), or Industry 4.0 — the con- cept is, at its core, all about commu- nication. Swissbit, a manufacturer of

autonomous communication between “things” comes with risks. How does a “thing” know that another “thing” is entitled to send or to receive data? How does a “thing” ensure that other system components are what they say they are? There is a clear danger of giving hackers control of autonomous cars, which can be accomplished through little more than some clever code and smart- phone. We certainly do not want another Stuxnet event or large-scale corporate data breach.
Secure Communications So, while we embrace the com-
munication of things, we have to
make sure that it complies with IT security standards beyond pass- words. Secure communication re - quires identification, authentication and authorization to rule out abuse. Thus, systems communicating with each other through a network must provide an identity that cannot be cloned and should have the ability to send and receive encrypted data. This requires a secure element inte- grated into each connected compo- nent.
Secure memory card technology
can be integrated easily into machines. Vendors can use a secure storage card in each machine that contains not only a flash memory chip, but also a secure element, such as a TPM. If machines on the shop floor have USB interfaces, USB sticks with integrated smart cards could be used to secure them. Still, each manufacturing company has to develop and implement its own IoM security concept. Machines could be “IoM security ready” and even retro- fitted fairly soon —all at low cost and
