Port Chester, NY — Swissbit has introduced its EM-20 embedded mul- timedia card (eMMC), which com- bines an industrial controller with reliable, multilevel cell (MLC) flash in a BGA153 package. This package allows the memory to be soldered directly onto the PCB. The card covers all typical
applications with capacities of 8 to 64 GB. EM-20 is designed to replace commonly used NAND memory chips, which depend on elaborate operating system resources. Due to its integrated controller, flash man- agement functionality and standard- ized interface, EM-20 can be easily
designed-in to applications. The firmware is designed for use as a streamlined and energy-sav-
ing boot medium for medical devices, POS/POI terminals or demanding industrial embedded computing applications. The EM-20 may also be operated in reliable/pseudo-SLC mode (pSLC). For certain applications, pSLC

It is significantly faster than the stan- dard use of multilevel cell flash tech- nology while increasing possible P/E cycles (program/erase cycles) from 3,000 to 20,000. Under the same con- ditions, the endurance of the data carriers increases by a factor of 6.7. The user can configure and choose between pSLC or MLC mode, even
for different partitions. EM-20 memory cards are based
on JEDEC 5.0 — the de facto stan- dard for industrial eMMCs. They are available with capacities of 8, 16, 32, or 64 GB and offer advanced firmware features, such as page- based flash management, wear lev- eling, read disturb management, data care management, and secure data erasure. The replay-protected memory
block (RPMB), a one-time writable partition, makes key-storage for trusted execution environments pos- sible. With data-refresh functionali- ties and an industrial operating tem- perature range of –40 to +85°C (–40 to +185°F), the data carrier is designed for long-term operation under harsh conditions.
