project,” explains Mark Ogden, ASM Americas marketing manager. “Unfor- tunately, it’s not uncommon for the placement program’s CAD data and the PCB’s Gerber data to be mis- aligned, for higher-cost or exotic com- ponents to appear on the shop floor at the last minute, or parts packaging not to arrive as anticipated.” Any one of these issues can

wreak havoc on projected turnaround time. In order to meet expectations, any simulation and corrective action that can be done off-line should be ad- dressed prior to production and last- minute surprises need immediate at- tention. This is where the system’s powerful, yet easy-to-use, E-Pro soft- ware makes the difference. Roadshow guests experienced the simplicity of program creation — accomplished both on and off the machine. For example, if component

shapes are unknown, the operator can mark them as “incomplete” and the program can still be downloaded to the machine. The system can also be paused during a PCB build, allowing new component shapes and placement positions to be taught on-the-fly, elim- inating the need for scrap or rework. This, in addition to cut-tape reverse feeder loading of short strips, enables production runs to occur with exact quantities. All of these capabilities ad- dress the challenges of quick-turn pro-

Dow Corning Develops Auto Electronics

Adhesive Auburn, MI — Dow Corning has added a high-performance material to its portfolio of solutions for the ad- vanced assembly of automotive sen- sors, driver assistance systems, inte- rior electronics, and displays. Dow Corning® EA-5151 Quick in Connect (QiC) adhesive combines fast green strength at room temperature, offer- ing an efficient alternative to heat- cured adhesives, double-sided tapes and mechanical fasteners. Available as a one-part silicone

formulation, EA-5151 QiC adhesive applies as a warmed liquid with a plunger-equipped gun or by robotic dispensing. It cools to a solid vis- coelastic material that bonds with- out the need for primers to a broad range of metals and plastics, includ- ing many substrates that are diffi- cult for many alternative solutions to adhere to. The silicone’s quick green

strength allows assembled parts to be handled immediately after appli- cation to minimize wait time, reduce energy costs and to eliminate the need for assembly aids, such as me- chanical fasteners and screws. If heated to temperatures between 120 and 130°C (248 and 266°F), the adhe- sive can be removed and reapplied within the first 24 hours, allowing parts to be reworked. Contact: Dow Corning, 220 W

Flexibility Central to Functionality Roadshow visitors also partici-

pated in demonstrations that high- lighted E by SIPLACE’s various set up and changeover strategies, which are customized according to individ- ual workflows. For the demonstra- tions, the platform was configured with two feeder carts, which allow off- line set up and simple roll-in/roll-out functionality for fast changeover of entire feeder banks simultaneously. Known for its robust and inno-

vative feeder technology, ASM has engineered E by SIPLACE smart E- feeders to align with the unique de-

mands of the mid-speed sector. Not only does this include off-line set up of multiple feeder banks, but individ- ual feeder swapping as well. When employing the “next set up” feature, those feeders that are required for the next job are identified with a green LED and those that can be re- moved are noted with a red LED, simplifying and streamlining the changeover routine. Finally, flexible tray handling

demonstrations using the JEDEC tray feeder (JTF) underscored the flexible tray management capability of E by SIPLACE. Attached to the 60- feeder-slot changeover table, JTF fa- cilitates tray loading while also re- serving space for feeders on the rest

of the table. Users can quickly ex- change the JTF for a standard 60- slot table when additional tape feed- er capacity is required. “E by SIPLACE impressed

roadshow visitors with its high-end features and competitive price point,” says Ogden in summary. “Normally, advanced capability on machines serving the mid-speed market is only available at addition- al upgrade cost. That’s not the case with E by SIPLACE.” Contact: ASM Assembly Sys-
