Essemtec’s FOX Assembles PCBs for Nano-Satellites

Glassboro, NJ —Many of today’s satel- lites are big, heavy, complex, and ex- tremely expensive. Their deployment

that. Nano-satellites are small and lightweight, and typically weigh less than 10 kg (22 lb). Nano-satellites provide high-tech

communication solutions in outer space for a fraction of the cost of con- ventional satellites. Typical operation of a nano-satellite is inside Earth’s low-orbit range of 350 to 1,200 km (217.5 to 746 mi). For comparison, the International Space Station orbits at a distance of 400 km (248 mi), while a TV broadcast satellite is around 36,000 km (22,369 mi) away.

New Flexible Black Solder Mask from Technic

Cranston, RI — Technic has released its TechniFlex LCL1000F/423M U6/U7, a matte black solder mask for flexible applications using direct im- aging. Today’s cutting-edge flexible circuits require a high-strength mate- rial that can withstand extremely

Enabling this technology is the

NANOCOM ADS-B board, manufac- tured on an Essemtec FOX placement machine by GomSpace ApS. The flight-proven ADS-B (automatic de- pendent surveillance —broadcast) is a receiver for tracking aircraft. It con- sists of an in-flight, reconfigurable FPGA CubeSat-compatible board, has a volume of less than 0.3U, uses less than 1W of power, and provides up to 800 ADS-B packages per second. There are many applications that these nano-satellites can address. One

application is in satellite tracking of vehicles or aircraft from orbit. If an air- craft sends a signal, usually ground stations and other airplanes receive the information, but when flying over large bodies of water, there are often no receivers within reach. A nano- satellite can fill the gap for communi-

cations, tracking, or surveillance. Contact: Essemtec USA, 816 N

high soldering temperatures and mul- tiple bending cycles while still meet- ing very fine pitch requirements. TechniFlex LCL 1000F/423M

U6/U7 makes processing these ad- vanced flexible PCBs possible, offer- ing a solution for difficult assembly conditions that include hot bar sol- dering or multiple lead-free reflows. Also, the 423M U6/U7 exhibits no cracking after multiple 180° bends, even when processing 12 µm poly- imide substrates. The solder mask also provides

extremely fine resolution for a matte black product. With less than 10 µm of undercut, TechiFlex LCL1000F/ 423M U6/U7 will consistently pro- vide high resolution on 50 µm solder dams with excellent chemical resist- ance to ENIG, ENEPIG, Ag and Sn finishes. The material is supplied in two versions, U6 for direct imag- ing/manual exposure and U7 for ei- ther direct imaging/manual exposure
