www.us-tech.com The “Cyber” Space Race By Philip Stoten (@philipstoten)

was born in the 1960s and spent my formative years glued to a black-and-white TV set watch- ing Russia and the U.S. duke it out over the domination of space. A race that was eventually settled by the moon landing on July 20th, 1969. Now the race is on for a different kind of

space. This time it’s the race for cyberspace, and the key protagonist facing off against the U.S. is not Russia, it is China, with Europe and Japan playing supporting roles. Perhaps the most important round in the bat-

tle for dominance of cyberspace is the drive for leadership in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). There is little doubt that AI is going to change every industry, as well as just about every element of our lives. The value of leadership in this area cannot, and should not, be underestimated. The hard numbers only tell one

part of the story. The U.S. is leading the way with close to 3,000 AI compa- nies, compared to just over 700 in China. The U.K., India and Canada make up the top five with 366, 233 and 228 firms respectively, all ac- cording to a report published last year by the Wuzhen Institute. The level of financing is also heav-

ily slanted in favor of the U.S. with more than $17 billion received by AI companies between Q1 of 2012 and Q2 of 2016. At the same time, Chinese companies received $2.6 billion and the U.K. around $800 million. Patent num- bers are somewhat closer with China at almost 16,000 compared with 26,000 for the United States. Curiously, Japan came in third on patents, barely behind China, with Germany and South Korea filling out the top five at around 4,000. But, it’s about so much more than just the numbers.

Sweeping Changes What is clear is that develop-

ments in this sector will change every- thing. In a recent interview with China Report, famed AI researcher Li Fei-Fei stated, “I believe that AI will impact our lives in many aspects but in most cases, AI won’t be a distinct enti- ty but will provide greater conven- ience. For example, doctors needing assistance with diagnosis, the man- agement of medical data and chronic diseases.” She added, “In transporta- tion, AI has altered travel through self-driving cars, computing optimiza- tion of big data and even the matching of supply and demand.” Former director of the Stanford

artificial intelligence lab and the Stanford vision lab, she believes that

in the future, AI will be as ubiquitous as electrici- ty is today. We will begin to take it for granted in the same way. Earlier this year, Fei-Fei joined Google Cloud AI & Machine Learning.

benchmark the performance of AI systems. Google’s AlphaGo recently beat China’s Go prodigy Ke Jie after defeating another top player, Lee Sedol, last March. Most experts agree that Go is the world’s

most complicated game, with seemingly endless possibilities and complex positioning and strategy. China has its own AlphaGo competitors, such as Jueyi, or FineArt, developed by Tencent, one of China’s technology giants. AlphaGo beat the aforementioned prodigy, Ke

Jie, in ten straight games, winning the title against some strong competition from Facebook’s Deepforest, Japan’s Deep Zen Go and France’s Continued on page 34
