August, 2017 The “Cyber” Space Race Continued from page 25

Crazy Stone. AI is booming in China right

now, with Tencent, Baidu and Aliba- ba all working on technology. China has close to 750 million internet users and more than 600 million smartphone users. This rapid growth has fueled the incredible rate of de- velopment at these companies. They are now looking to lead the race to AI supremacy, which they see as the key battleground in cyberspace. Alibaba recently announced two new AI serv- ices, one in the medical sector, called ET Medical Brain and the other, ET Industrial Brain, in the sector of in- dustrial automation. Alibaba also has a new AI plat-

form for companies with no AI expe- rience, called PAI 2.0, which offers practical use of its AI Cloud ET pro- grams to a broad number of users.

And, it’s not just the Chinese busi- ness and investors that are keen on AI, the government is also pushing development of AI with smart city projects and much more. China clear- ly believes that AI is key to maintain- ing their position of the “factory of the world,” with the goal of becoming the “smart factory of the world.” So, as the battle for AI leader-

ship in the augmented age heats up, one thing is for sure: the world is changing faster than ever. Domi- nance of cyberspace, just like that of outer space throughout the 1960s is more than just national pride or propaganda, it’s how we keep score in terms of leadership in technology and in the today’s world. Neil Arm- strong said famously, “…one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” AI represents the next giant leap. r
