Miller Transforms Inventory Management with Arcadia Smart Storage from Kubler US
By Timothy David W
hen Miller, a recognized leader in high-perform- ance welding equipment
and related systems, sought to modernize its SMT inventory room, it turned to a solution that was not just smart — it was strategic. The company recently installed 14 Archimede smart storage racks and one incoming table from Arcadia, a European innovator in intelligent material handling systems. The technolo- gy was delivered and integrated by Kubler US, Arcadia’s North American distributor, with hands-on support from Midwest rep firm Murray Percival Com- pany and the expert guidance of Bruce Clark.
Smooth Solution Before implementing the
Archimede smart storage system, Miller’s inventory setup was, in the words of Manufacturing Engi- neer Jason Haw, “a rough process.” Parts were stored nu- merically on static shelving, mak- ing it difficult to add new invento-
ry or quickly locate components. Operators often had to rearrange entire shelves just to accommo- date a new part number. Proto- types, small-batch items, and cut tape pieces frequently got lost in the shuffle, leading to delays and waste.
The Archimede system fun-
damentally changed Miller’s ma- terial flow. “Now, any new part is treated like every other part,” Haw explains. Parts are scanned in, stored efficiently, and logical- ly organized to support first-in, first-out inventory practices. High-use parts are positioned near the front of the storage area, while incoming stock is routed to the back. This has en- abled a faster, more reliable kit- ting process and dramatically improved part traceability. An unanticipated benefit?
Enhanced visibility into cut tape and bagged component usage. “Now we can actually see what we have,” says Haw. “It’s already helping us make smarter pur- chasing decisions.”
Little Downtime Miller was initially con-
cerned about downtime during the transition. However, the in- stall was completed in just two days, with the SMT room only shut down for a single day. “That’s pretty remarkable when you’re replacing your entire in- ventory system,” Haw notes. Credit goes to the seamless coor- dination between Miller, Kubler US, and Bruce Clark of the Mur- ray Percival Company. Everyone from Boris Kübler to Arcadia’s Software Manager Daniele Pelit- ti to Bruce was onsite — not just supervising but physically help- ing place reels on shelves. According to Haw, one of the
key reasons Miller selected Arca- dia over other suppliers was their willingness to customize and inte- grate. “Other vendors offered more of a ‘take it or leave it’ ap- proach,” he says. “With Arcadia and Kubler US, it was collabora- tive. They knew our needs weren’t standard, and they made sure the system would fit our workflow —
not the other way around.” That meant overcoming in-
tegration challenges with exist- ing Mycronic systems. “Boris and the Arcadia team worked side- by-side with us until everything was right,” Haw said. The impact of the new system
has already reached Miller’s cus- tomers. Faster kitting means shorter lead times. Improved in- ventory visibility means fewer sur- prises, fewer shortages, and re- duced costs. And in a flexible envi- ronment like Miller’s — where parts are often unique and irre-

placeable — the ability to instantly locate every component is critical. “If we lose a reel, that could
delay a customer’s project by days,” Haw explains. “Now, we don’t lose reels.” For Kubler US, bringing Ar-

cadia’s European smart storage technology to North America isn’t just about selling equip- ment — it’s about building rela- tionships and creating custom-fit solutions. “We view every instal- lation as a partnership,” says Boris Kübler, CEO of Kubler US. “Miller had unique needs, and to- gether with Arcadia, we made sure those needs were met. We’re proud of the results.” With the Archimede smart
