October, 2022 hi-TeCh evenTS IPCAPEX Expo to Host PCB Design Competition
BANNOCKBURN, IL — For the second consecutive year, IPC is hosting a PCB design competition at IPC APEX Expo 2023. The IPC Design Competition is composed of two heats — a virtual prelimi- nary heat and an in-person layout final for the top three competitors on January 24, 2023. “This year, we’re kicking
things up a notch with more advanced designs, travel sti pends for finalists, and cash prizes,” said Patrick Crawford, manager, design standards and related
industry programs. “Anyone with an interest in board design can register, but we’re recommending the hobbyists and professionals alike have several years of experi- ence designing boards and a familiarity with and ability to implement IPC standards re - quirements. Access to an ECAD tool is a must for the first heat,” added Crawford. The preliminary heat will be
held October 17 to November 18, 2022, allowing designers to use their preferred tools to complete
Support Program for APEC 2023 Student Attendance
ORLANDO, FL — The joint spon- sors of the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) have announced the continuation of the popular Student Atten - dance Support Program for APEC 2023, scheduled to take place in Orlando, March 19 to 23. Chosen recipients of the pro-
gram will receive reimbursement to cover qualified expenses for attending APEC 2023. Those eli- gible to apply for the program are power electronics students, undergraduate or graduate, who have been accepted to present papers at the upcoming confer- ence in March. Once accepted, student presenters must apply for the program by October 26, 2022.
In its 18th year, this popular
program was initiated by the Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA). It is now jointly underwritten by PSMA and the other co-sponsors of the APEC conference. The recipients must be an author or coauthor of a paper that was accepted for presentation at APEC 2023. Only students who have not received support in the past will be considered. The applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a power electronics program at an accredited institution. After attending APEC 2023
as a speaker, the student must submit expense receipts to the

a full board buildup within 25 days. Provided with only a schematic, a BOM (bill of materi- als) and a scope of work docu- ment, competitors will be respon- sible for returning a Gerber file package of a completed design and judged against their inter- pretation and implementation of design per IPC standards and general DFX (design for excel- lence) principles. Three finalists will be invit-
ed to participate in the four-hour layout final at IPC APEX EXPO 2023. In the final round, com- petitors will be given a partially complete Altium Design project file and will have four hours to complete a layout including design rule specification, rout- ing, and component placement.
