the solder mask of the PCB as the mask is softened during preheating and soldering. Solder agitation and turbulence

should be avoided as splashing solder will attach to oxygen molecules and create solder dross, due to surface energy. A grooved or sleeved riser will force controlled drainage from the noz- zle and is found to greatly decrease dross creation, while dramatically reducing solder ball formation.

ControlFlow Nozzle System To reduce solder dross forma-

tion and minimize the creation of sol- der balls during the selective solder- ing process, Nordson SELECT has

July, 2020 Reducing Dross and Solder Balls in Selective Soldering

introduced its ControlFlow nozzle system. This new development was

designed specifically for reducing dross formation and minimizing sol- der balls. ControlFlow nozzles are com-

patible with all Nordson SELECT selective soldering machines. So, whether end users are operating an entry-level standalone selective sol- dering machine or a larger inline selective soldering system, Control - Flow Nozzles have a dramatic impact on reducing dross accumulation and minimizing the creation of solder balls.

ControlFlow solder nozzles are

specifically designed with controlled flow risers and outer sleeves that sig- nificantly reduce the formation of sol- der dross and the creation of solder

balls by minimizing solder turbulence. ControlFlow nozzle are available

in 0.118 to 1 in. (3 to 25.4 mm) sizes, with mini-wave nozzles available in 0.157 to 1 in. (3.9 to 25.4 mm). All ControlFlow nozzles are magnetically coupled to allow rapid changeover between different-sized nozzles, mini- mizing interruptions to production. ControlFlow nozzles also mini-

mize solder turbulence and solder agitation for improved solder flow and increased nozzle life. The newly designed sleeved riser provides improved solder flow with less solder oscillation and reduced solder ball formation. ControlFlow solder noz- zles also greatly increase process run times and enable longer nozzle usage times. This innovation was designed

specifically for reducing dross forma- tion and minimizing solder balls, as well as improving solder flow and increasing solder nozzle life. It is available for all Nordson SELECT Novo®, Cerno® and Integra® selective soldering machines. In addition, a conversion kit is

available that allows legacy solder pumps to be upgraded for Control - Flow solder nozzles. This means that the ControlFlow solder nozzle system is backward-compatible with, and can be retrofitted to, all existing Nordson SELECT and ACE Production Technologies KISS standalone and inline selective soldering machines. The Nordson SELECT Control -

Flow solder nozzle system has been designed to ensure optimal results for customers, by greatly reducing solder dross and minimizing the occurrence of solder balls, during selective solder- ing operations. Contact: Nordson SELECT,

nesses involved in agriculture, food products, manufactured goods, auto- motive parts, clothing, and leather goods. This is because reliable humidi-

ty indication and moisture control gives shippers and buyers alike a means of monitoring moisture expo- sure and preventing damage — whether to packages or containerized cargo — caused by everything from rust and corrosion to water damage, mold or spoilage. Today, the technology envi-

sioned by Rear Admiral Blinn pro- tects everything from bulk and bagged agricultural commodities and foods to clothing and leather goods, finished automotive and metal prod- ucts, and more. Contact: Clariant Cargo &
