10 QUESTIONS
10 QUESTIONS WITH... GARY KIDD
Each issue, we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Gary Kidd, Managing Director of ISS Facility Services Integrated Solutions.
Q5
WHAT SHOULD FMS BE DOING THAT THEY’RE NOT?
As an industry, I feel we simply don’t tell people about the great job we do. We shouldn’t be afraid to be more celebratory of our successes. FM does a great job supporting the world around us.

Q3
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS?
Authentic, focussed, pragmatic.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first ever job was working
as a trainee supermarket manager, though I won’t name names. My first job in FM was with MacAlpine as Account Director for EDS.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FM INDUSTRY?
My background was in manufacturing; I’d moved three companies to low cost geographies, liked the idea of a change and moved into support services. The rest, as they say, is history.
Q4
IF YOU COULD GIVE YOUR PAST SELF ONE PIECE OF
ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
It’s two-pronged – I’d have to say, be persistent and don’t accept second best.

Q7 Q8
WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST RECORD ON YOUR DESERT
ISLAND DISC? ‘Do You Realise?’ by The Flaming Lips
WHICH THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD YOU INVITE
TO YOUR ULTIMATE DINNER PARTY?
Mackenzie Thorpe (a great British artist), Michael Stipe (musician, vocalist, Renaissance man) and Ray Winston (noted London actor).

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
I support West Ham... when they’re not in the relegation zone!
Q9
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF THE FM INDUSTRY?
Looking ahead, the industry should expect consolidation and more commoditisation. The key success factors for the players will be found in differentiation and service excellence – the ability to deliver better.
Tony Raikes, Managing Director of Vinci Facilities, asks:
Q10
DOES THE INDUSTRY OVER-ANALYSE ITS
WEAKNESSES AT THE EXPENSE OF CELEBRATING ITS SUCCESSES?
I don’t believe so. It’s wise to be reflective and understand our achievements, yet at the same time, to celebrate our successes.
