FM 2014 PREVIEW
THE HEALTH & SAFETY EVENT Visitors to The Health & Safety Event,
which takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from 11th to 13th March, will have a unique opportunity to engage with live debates surrounding the most significant health and safety issues at the event’s Safety Dialogue Theatre. Additionally, visitors will also have the chance to join their peers and network over breakfast at the event’s new ‘Breakfast Briefings’ which take place daily, between 8am and 9am.
Running throughout the three-day event, the Safety Dialogue Theatre will offer visitors the chance to share their experiences and engage with a panel of recognised experts. The panel will focus on a number of issues such as noise- induced hearing loss. During this session, visitors will be able to discuss the deployment of the hearing conservation programme that employers are now required to implement to manage the risks associated with noise. This session will be of particular interest to those wanting to discuss whether this programme alone is adequate, with the current rise of litigation surrounding noise-induced hearing loss, how to educate the workforce on the risks of hearing loss in their personal life as well as in the workplace, and the potential to go above and beyond the current legislation.
Another discussion will focus on ‘Behavioural safety techniques and how it is important to win hearts and minds in order to improve
PPE compliance’. This session will explore how using tools and techniques can alter the way a person behaves in the workplace. The discussion will cover how organisations can move beyond safety management systems to improve compliance as well as how to develop a culture in which the workforce actively want to protect themselves in a safe and appropriate way.
A third topic for debate looks at respiratory protective equipment (RPE). This session will discuss a simplified approach to selecting the correct respiratory product for a workplace environment using valid judgement tools. The discussion will include some tips that can assist decision making and address compatibility, as well as key factors to look for when deciding on a solution to safeguard the workforce.
Something new taking place at the event this year is the ‘Breakfast Briefings’, which are scheduled daily. Before the exhibition opens, each morning, visitors will have the opportunity to join their peers and network over breakfast, with the additional benefit of a guest speaker. Visitors must pre-register in order to secure a place.
The first morning’s briefing session is entitled ‘Automatic External Defibrillators, Changing Lives and Community Projects’. Over breakfast, visitors will be able to find out how Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) are changing the world of health and safety, listen to real life stories of survivors who
have received the benefits of AEDs and how their community can be changed with an AED.
The second day Breakfast Briefing benefits from guest VIP speaker, Ed Galea, a renowned expert on advising governments on how to avoid potential disasters. In his briefing, Ed will be speaking about real life emergency experiences such as 9/11 and the World Trade Centre disaster, and how egress affects the world of health and safety.
‘Secrets of Fire Risk Assessments and how to stay out of prison’ is the final Breakfast Briefing taking place on day three. The briefing will give visitors an overview from the Fire Service on how to develop the perfect Fire Risk Assessment. With corporate manslaughter prison sentences becoming more prevalent, this briefing will detail exactly how to keep on track and avoid prosecution.
Along with event partners, Ansell, Arco, DuPont, NQA, and title sponsor, 3M, the regional Health & Safety events are supported by the British Safety Council and officially endorsed by the International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM).
