Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Sylvie Giangolini, General Manager at Hako Machines Ltd.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,


WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? That’s tough! I’m lucky to have done lots of travelling in my lifetime and seen a huge amount of the world. Top 3 places on my current bucket list are Santorini for a relaxing ‘me time’ break, New Orleans for the party aspect and China – the country intrigues and fascinates me.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?


Sales and Marketing co-ordinator for an Events Company. Loved the client-facing side and the events we ran were pretty spectacular back then – the motor and boat shows, high profile product launches mainly for FMCG sector – I experienced a variety of markets, products, client types and routes to markets which provided me with a great basis of sales theory and process and also client and people management – fantastic training ground.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?


I worked for a commercial laundry company so have been in the cleaning industry and capital equipment for over 17 years. An opportunity came up with a global cleaning manufacturer, Hako, which I felt excited about and saw the potential, both for personal and business growth – so here I am! It’s not glamorous but I love it.

PERSONALITY? Honest, tenacious and hard-working.

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING


INDUSTRY? I would like to see more regulation put on what is regarded as commercial cleaning equipment. Far too often we see a new ‘competitor’ enter the market with something that would struggle on a domestic basis let alone a commercial environment, but sold at a third of the price of its closest rival.

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,


WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Be brave. Even when you have a career plan things happen and you need to be prepared and flexible to maximise every opportunity.


There may be a time that you need to step up, take more responsibility or learn a new skill, when that time comes embrace it. Take all the advice you can from people around you, and do it.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD


YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I would invest my fortune in my children’s futures, and maybe one or two holidays.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE


ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Adele, Victoria Wood and David Attenborough. I think listening to the stories they’d have would be fantastic, plus we wouldn’t be short on entertainment.


WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE


CLEANING INDUSTRY? As all companies are looking at cost effective solutions, I think we are going to see a lot more innovation in the future, more multi-use vehicles with bigger and better service packages. Hako Machines of course will be at the forefront.
