PREMIUM PRODUCTS FOR A PREMIUM PROFESSION
Cromwell Polythene Managing Director James Lee says it is important cleaning
operatives are equipped with the best products if they are to do their jobs efficiently, safely, and sustainably.
A bad workman blames his tools, goes the old saying; there’s some truth to this, but it’s overly simplistic. If a cleaning operative’s bag splits and spills its contents everywhere, for instance, it’s not their lack of skill that has caused the issue, but they’re the ones who will have to sort it out.
HORSES FOR COURSES If we are ever to convince the wider world of the value the cleaning industry brings in terms of health, hygiene and sustainability, then we must begin by ensuring cleaning operatives are given the right tools for the job.
Sometimes this will mean paying a higher price, but there’s truth in the saying ‘you get what you pay for’. It’s worth paying a premium for products which conform to industry standards rather than relying on ‘cheap’ brown- box alternatives.
I understand there can be a reluctance to spend money on consumables – especially ones as basic as a refuse sack. However, even ‘basic’ products can be of varying quality. It is important to appreciate the benefits of a premium product – which offers quality, performance and consistency – over the short-term savings. In the longer-term, buying ‘cheap’ products will mean businesses will suffer from being ill-equipped and wasteful.
Although contracts are often heavily dependent on price, the client will lose out too. If operatives aren’t given quality products, jobs could take longer, as they may have to clear up twice, for example.
Purchasing decisions should include sustainable options where possible to avoid unwanted environmental impacts. For instance, when choosing cleaning products that are packaged in plastic, purchasers should always select products that are clearly labelled as recyclable. Even better

is when the plastic is itself already created from recycled material. Premium products are more likely to meet these specifications.

QUALITY AND QUANTITY With cheaper products, purchasers need to check that the quality and quantity of material provided matches that of the order; for instance, the description on the box doesn’t always match the quantity on the inside. Otherwise cleaning operatives can be caught short when they’re working on site, meaning delays and extra deliveries.
Industry standards and third- party accreditations – as well as recommendations – are good ways to identify reliable suppliers. We are a long-established, independent, family- run business, which sets and meets high standards. We are also founding members of the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) Refuse Sack Standard Accreditation Scheme. The CHSA code of practice provides customers with an assurance of professional conduct, customer service and quality.
RIGHT PRODUCT,
RIGHT PLACE It can be easy to take a ‘one size fits all’ approach, but this can soon backfire with even the simplest products. If you have the wrong size liner in your bins there will be no benefit to using a liner at all. If too small, the liner cannot be fitted correctly, effective capacity is reduced because it doesn’t completely line the bin, or worse still, it will not stretch around the top of the bin in the first place.
If the liner is too big to secure around the top of the bin it simply falls in when anything is placed in it. Once again life will be difficult for the cleaning operative if they don’t have the right options. That’s why we supply over 400 different sacks and bags of almost every size, shape and colour imaginable.
BEYOND THE BAGS Of course, not all cleaning equipment involves plastic bags, but we believe the same principles apply to all. It is imperative to spend effectively to get an effective return on investment, allow operatives to do a proper job, and ultimately provide clients with the required levels of service. Premium products are the way to ensure that happens.
