RIDING THE CHEMICAL INNOVATION WAVE

There is often some bad press around the use of solvents in dry cleaning, largely generated from historical issues with old machines and outdated practices with waste disposal, when there was always the distinctive smell of solvent in a dry cleaning shop. This is no longer the case, due to improvements in technology and legislation introduced to combat poor practices.
As technology has improved, machines are more efficient and require less solvent per cycle. This has led to a reduction in the strong smell associated with dry cleaning and a reduction in waste. The only waste going to the drain is clean, distilled water, and any waste solvent, detergent or dirt from the clothes can be fully recycled, so the process is environmentally sound.
But, the use of solvent cleaning is becoming more expensive with extra government legislation and higher costs of disposal. The capital costs of a dry cleaning machine using any solvent is also high and unless there is a relatively high volume of work, a dry cleaning machine may not be a cost effective way of offering a cleaning service for delicate garments.
There is however a modern alternative to dry cleaning that is becoming more
popular across Europe and gaining interest in UK high street laundry and dry clean outlets. This involves wet cleaning but with specifically engineered chemicals that will not harm delicate fabrics.
There are several benefits of moving towards a water-based system, not least the fact that it is not harmful to the operator or the environment and that it reduces the risk of damage to delicate fabrics. Another advantage is that a far wider range of products can be washed such as suede, leather, silk and even Ugg boots. In addition, bleachable stains can be treated using this method of cleaning.
Cole & Wilson has a range of wet cleaning products available under the Pro-fit range. For delicate wet cleaning, the AquaWave process is designed to clean and protect dry clean only items with the full process taking just 60 minutes.
The AquaWave cleaning system, which can be used in all common wet cleaning machines, works by combining two innovative chemicals: Pro-Fit Wool and Pro-Fit Body. These are used together in a gentle one- wash-one-rinse cleaning process in any chosen wet cleaning machine.

Pro-Fit Wool can be used with temperatures as low as 20°C and as it contains the latest generation of surfactants, and its high lanolin content provides a natural protection layer for wool fibres.
Pro-fit Body is a liquid finishing agent used in the second stage to give body to garments and to protect fibres during the drying process, and also helps stop shrinkage. It reduces wrinkling, facilitates ironing and restores the shape and touch to the most delicate fabrics, leaving a fresh scent.
Traditional wet cleaning methods demand a substantial amount of finishing due to wrinkling. AquaWave solves this problem with its dry-to- dry technology whereby textiles are perfectly cleaned but much less wrinkled, thus reducing the process time down to 60 minutes.
Although there will always be some fabrics that are better dry cleaned, there are alternatives for a wide range of textiles which provide outstanding wash results and that can offer laundry outlets a more efficient and simpler way of handling their dry-clean only items.
