A 108 year-old, working vaccum cleaner is one of a collector’s favourite items, that he has saved from being thrown away.
Harry Cox, a collector from Timperley, rescued the antique machine from the WL Coller paper merchants factory, where he works, as staff were about to throw it out in light of a move to a new premises.
Harry told the press: “I didn’t like to see such an old machine, and a piece of history, just getting flung on the tip.
“I would really love to know how much it’s worth but it’s hard to find out much about it.
“I like to collect things that would otherwise get thrown away, restore them and given them a new lease of life. It makes me feel good.”
The vacuum cleaner is an American Sturtevant, manufactured in 1904, and was designed for use at large residences, such as hotels and churches. It came fully equipped with wall brushes and an upholstery tool, which are all still in perfect working order, despite its age.
Could this be one of the oldest working vacuum cleaners in the UK? If you have an older machine in your possession, let us know! Email
