It’s offi cial: Clonakilty was voted the best town to live in all of Ireland and the UK last year. The prestigious award was bestowed on the West Cork town by the Academy of Urbanism, and voted on by a panel of leading architects, planners and developers, rating towns on a range of social, economic and environmental factors.

Sustainable Development Solutions Network and is based on Gallup International surveys conducted from 2015 to 2017, across six factors: gross domestic product per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and corruption levels. Ireland experienced an increase in “health-adjusted life expectancy” of 4.1 years, going from a life expectancy of 67.4 years in 2000 to 71.5 years in 2015. The report also listed Ireland as the 11th migrants.

MEETING SKILLS NEEDS Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) has launched a new postgraduate research training programme that will see
over €100 million invested by the Government of Ireland to meet industry skills needs. The new SFI Centres for Research Training initiative will provide training for 600 postgraduate students in areas of nationally and internationally identified future skills needs of digital, data and ICT. The SFI Centres for Research Training will be required to build partnerships with enterprise in the design and delivery of training programmes to ensure that
postgraduates have the necessary skillsets to meet the needs of enterprise. sfi .ie
In previous Ireland-based awards, Westport, Co Mayo topped the The Irish Times Best Place to Live in Ireland poll. With Westport on the fi nal shortlist were Ardara, Co Donegal and Killarney, Co Kerry.
The judges of the Great Town Award noted: “Clonakilty is a good example of those three elements coming together in a sustainable way that celebrates local distinctiveness, tradition, entrepreneurialism and a strong sense of local pride.”
