complexities of Carrickmacross lace to intricate Arran knits–but what do these old ways mean in a modern world? Rather than consign traditional skills and crafts to museums and history books, a new breed of contemporary craftspeople is learning to master traditional techniques and interpret them for a contemporary audience.


The ways in which they are reaching their audience are changing too, with modern makers embracing social media, networking and collaboration. With contemporary expression rooted in deep learning and understanding of the techniques of their crafts, these makers are preserving skills which may otherwise be lost in a world where cheap manufacturing and fast fashion are the order of the day.
