Amazon has announced that it is creating more than 1,000 permanent new technology jobs in Ireland over the next two years. In addition to central Dublin, where Amazon opened a new 170,000 sq ft building in June, these highly skilled roles will be based in Amazon locations in North County Dublin, Blanchardstown and Tallaght. The fi gure of 1,000 new jobs doubles the growth target committed to by Amazon in 2016, when the company pledged to hire 500 people in two years–and did so nine months ahead of schedule. amazon.co.uk

Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the IMF and former French fi nance minister, gave the opening address at The Euro at 20, a two-day conference hosted by the Central Bank in Dublin at the end of June, looking at positives and negatives of the currency. Predicting a mass relocation of fi nancial fi rms to the continent and Ireland, Ms Lagarde stressed the need for enhanced regulatory and supervisory capacity in preparation, saying, “The euro area needs truly integrated fi nancial and capital markets that allow companies to raise fi nancing across borders more easily and support investment.”


RECORD RUN Employment was up 2.9 per cent or 62,100 to 2,220,500 in the year to Q1 2018 according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). This follows on from a bumper quarter for employment growth in Q4 2017 as a record 29,000 jobs created in Q4 alone–a quarterly increase unmatched in 20 years of available figures. After 22 quarters in a row of jobs growth, the economy has now recovered most of the jobs lost during the downturn, at its low point in Q3 2011.
