and have it be the same kind of company? It’s not inevitable that a culture has to disappear as you grow but it takes a lot of intentionality,” says Cohen.
STAYING CONSISTENT Start-ups will also need to think about maintaining a consistent culture when they get to the stage of expanding internationally. That’s what has made Limerick such a good fit for WP Engine, Cohen says. “We were looking for a city that had a
culture where we felt it would be easy to hire people who fit our culture. This city exudes the kind of stuff that’s in our zone. And you have this university that’s constantly putting out the kind of people that we like to hire because we already have an internal culture of learning and development,” he says. He adds: “The IDA has been extremely helpful before and after. And I think the ‘and
after’ is extremely important. That is what partnership looks like, and you don’t find that everywhere–you don’t even find that in American cities from the Chamber of Commerce. Even in Austin, they don’t do that for you. That is really big to have that kind of a partner.” As we wrap up the interview, it turns out
that the same questioning mindset Cohen keeps returning to throughout the interview was the original inspiration for his blog. Asked why he writes, he replies that it helps him to grapple with an issue and find out how he feels about it. “It helps if you want to think through
something and get past it, and see what you think about it, then you should write it down. And even if you disagree with it after you write it down, or a year later, that’s okay. That’s what it means to figure out what you think about things.”
