LIFESTYLE
After Hours
Employees of multinationals around Ireland share the secrets of their work life balance–their favourite ways to spend their free time.
T
he beauty of living in a small country is that you are never too far from
anything. Even in the capital city you can be in the mountains or on the beach within half an hour. And when they shut down their computers at the end of the day, employees of multinationals around the country make the most of this access to stunning scenery and outdoor pursuits, not to mention great food and of course, the legendary craic (but that’s best left to weekends, not a work night!).
“After work, my favourite thing to do is watch my children play GAA. As a wife and mother of three boys, sport is a big thing in our house. I am a very proud mother and always enjoy watching them play. My passion for the sport has become deeper since I got involved in my
local Limerick GAA club as club secretary. I also like to go for runs in the local village with my ‘jolly joggers’ team. I regularly compete in 5km and 10km runs in Doneraile Park and my local community. Working for Cook Medical and living in Munster has allowed me to lead a very active lifestyle.”
Ainara Borda O’Callaghan, from Basque Country, is EMEA Fulfilment Manager at Cook Medical in Co Limerick.
We asked people around the country:
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO AFTER WORK?
“My favourite thing to do after work is to go into Cork city where we have a huge selection of really great restaurants that source local produce so every day you can have a different menu. The city has become multicultural so as well as great restaurants, there are music venues and festivals which create a great atmosphere and during the summer months, coupled with good weather, there is no better place to be.” Cynthia O’Keeffe is Senior Manager, Regional HR Services with VmWare in Ballincollig, Co Cork.
“After work I like to integrate into the great sporting culture in the Shannon area. Whether it’s catching a Munster rugby match, watching the horse or greyhound races, or
happening across any number of local sporting events. There always seems to be something happening and the local culture provides a great atmosphere and friendly competitive spirit.” Daniel Howk, from the USA, is Senior Director of Quality at Edwards Lifesciences in Shannon, Co Clare.
“I like jogging in St Stephens Green park, going to see the deer at the Phoenix Park and enjoying a pint of Guinness in our local beside the Digital Hub!”
Ignacio Gil Bárez, originally from Spain, works as Hybrid Inside Sales Representative at Software AG in The Digital Hub, Dublin 8.
