High School State Honors Mixed Choir Staff


Dr. Frank Watkins, associate professor of music and director of choral studies at UW-Eau Claire, is the conductor of the 2021 WSMA High School State Honors Mixed Choir. John Popke from Kimberly High School is the mixed choir coordinator and tenor section coach. Other section coaches include Kathleen Bader from Coleman High School (soprano), Joy Paffenroth from Kaukauna High School (alto), Ryan Moldenhauer from Watertown High School (bass), and Shelley Hooper from Kettle Moraine High School in Wales is the mixed choir accompanist.


Fall Concert: Thursday, October 28, 8 p.m., Overture Hall, Overture Center, 201 State Street, Madison, WI.

Dr. Joni Jensen, director of choral activities and professor of voice at Texas Woman’s University-Denton, is the conductor of the 2021 WSMA High School State Honors Treble Choir. Jennifer Yancey from Oregon High School is the treble choir coordina- tor and soprano 1 section coach. Other section coaches include Desiree Duwe from Rhinelander High School (soprano 2), Susan Franco from Rice Lake High School (alto 1), Janet Holdt from Cumberland High School (alto 2) and Kira Morrissey from Iola-Scandinavia High School is the treble choir accompanist.

Plan now to attend all three WSMA High School State Honors concerts held in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Music Conference. The performances are certain to excite and inspire you! The spirit, musicianship and performance quality of these concerts is a reminder of the many reasons we go into this profession. These concerts provide the opportunity for teachers to hear some of Wisconsin’s best musicians performing high quality literature.


2022 Audition Registration

Jamey Simmons, director of jazz studies at Middle Tennessee State University, is the conductor of the 2021 WSMA High School State Honors Jazz Ensemble. David Dunning from Neen- ah High School is the jazz ensemble coordinator and trombone coach. Other section coaches include Matt McVeigh from Sun Prairie High School (saxophone), Jeffrey Kitzman from Cudahy Middle School (trumpet) and Doug Syme from Milwaukee High School of the Arts (rhythm section).
