WSMA High School State Honors Music Camp
Victoria Donahue, WSMA Program Director
This past June, 426 of Wisconsin’s finest high school musi- cians attended a hybrid summer camp for the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) High School State Honors Music Project. Students worked with five nationally recognized conductors and 32 of Wisconsin’s finest music educators through three days of virtual rehearsal and one day of in-person rehearsal at Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids. Throughout honors camp, students engaged in holistic lessons that incorporated several musical aspects of the pro- grammed repertoire (e.g., history, theory, style, composition, text and culture), connected with composers, worked with coaches and peers in daily sectionals that focused on technique and skill and rehearsed in person as a full ensemble.
The WSMA State Honors Music Project would not be pos- sible without the dedication, efforts and commitment of our volunteer staff. Honors staff went above and beyond this year to assist in planning the hybrid honors camp, attending virtual staff meetings, hosting virtual chair placement auditions and assisting conductors in planning both virtual and in-person rehearsals.
Thank you to this year’s conductors and staff for providing a unique educational opportunity for the State Honors students amidst the current challenges caused by COVID-19. You are truly exceptional and once again, provided the educational and musical environment for which the program is so well known.
A special thank you to the staff at Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids including Julie Stoffel, Ginger Marten, Jeanne Olson, Eric Brittnacher, Sara Danke and Doug Look for their assistance with planning and executing this event. Additionally, a very special thank you to Craig Broeren, superintendent of Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools, and Ronald Rasmussen, principal at Lincoln High School for their assistance in hosting the summer camp at their school.
