Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance (CMP)

Submitted by Marcy Russell – CMP Chair

The CMP Summer Workshop was held June 29-30 at Monona Terrace in Madi- son. This two-day workshop provided the first in-person CMP workshop since the summer of 2019. Over 60 participants and committee members gathered to explore the five points of the model, several for the first time! Participants were encouraged to select repertoire that meets the specific and unique needs of their students, and they were challenged to diversify and expand repertoire choices as well. While there was not time to write a complete CMP plan, a significant amount of time was given to crafting three specific outcomes (Knowledge, Skill and Affect) for one piece they plan to teach to their students. Dates for future CMP workshops are yet to be determined, but plan for an in-person Winter Workshop in late January and a full week workshop in the summer of 2022!

Wisconsin WMEA Leadership Attends the 2021 NAfME National Assembly

WMEA President Paul Budde, Past- President Kati Seiter, President-Elect Brad Schneider, WMEA Executive Director Laurie Fellenz and Communications Di- rector Kevin Thays attended the National Assembly on June 26-29. Because of CO- VID-19 concerns, the NAfME gathering was held virtually.

Saturday, June 26 opened with a sym- posium on equity. NAfME President Mackie Spradley challenged members to “Examine our thinking, speaking and doing.” The NAfME National Assembly opened the next day on Sunday, June 27. Always a dramatic speaker, newly appointed Director of NAfME, Chris Woodside welcomed all attendees to the opening meeting. President-Elect Scott Sheehan encouraged members to, “build community, listen to understand, not to respond,” and reminded us that we, “ALL BELONG as well as ALL CONTRIBUTE to NAfME.”

The keynote speaker was Estelle Jor- genson from the University of Indiana’s Jacobs School of Music. In a powerful ad- dress, Ms. Jorgenson reminded us to “take care of the music, take care of ourselves,” and to, “Reach out through music to bind our nation’s wounds.” “It is our duty,” she said, “to influence wider society through the power of our example.”

The NAfME National Assembly ending with a rally, conferring awards to state MEAs and closing with an inspiring talk from NOLA musician and grammy award winning teacher, Mickey Smith Jr.

NAfME North Central Regional News

Submitted by Rich Tengowski, North Cen- tral president-elect and band instructor at Kohler High School

Membership:

One year ago, NAfME projected a 30% decrease in membership due to the pan- demic and adjusted the budget accord- ingly. The good news is that membership the past three months has risen signifi- cantly, and an upward trend is expected to continue throughout all state affiliates.

NAfME is excited to announce a new membership initiative. The Member- ship Growth Incentive Initiative is a pilot program, designed to spur member- ship growth in both State affiliates and NAfME. Basically, a larger percentage of your dues dollars will stay in Wisconsin if you are a new member or are renewing after two years absence. If you are a new member, or have not renewed for two years or more, WE NEED YOU TO JOIN NAfME now… more than ever.

National Assembly:

At the June 2021 National Assembly, state leaders worked toward developing a new strategic plan focusing on equity. President Mackie Spradley is leading this initiative. While state leaders began the work, development of this strategic plan will be a nine-month process and NAfME will be looking for your feedback and input. NAfME wants input and direction so keep an eye out for this release and I encourage you to share your voice in the planning and direction of our organization.
