planning: Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Access (IDEA). The 2017 conference offered several sessions in this area and we plan to expand the offerings for the 2018 conference. While the 2018 conference planning meeting has passed, sessions that fit within this subject, and any of the other established subjects, have been proposed by WMEA members. The committee strives to ensure that the sessions offered address the needs of all of its members, and the conscious creation of the IDEA subject represents one significant step towards that goal.


As another step towards increasing diver- sity and inclusion, WMEA has created the Melvin F. Pontius Creative Sparks in Music Education Award. The award rec- ognizes creativity in the music classroom and several of the award winners over its five-year existence have been chosen because of their innovative class offerings that are outside of what we refer to as the “big three” – band, choir and orchestra. Composition, technology, commercial music and hip hop studies are among the class offerings that garnered an award for creative work and design of WMEA edu- cators. These classes have no doubt drawn in students who are not members of band, choir or orchestra in their school. This type of inclusion is important and provides a more diverse view of music and music education for the students who attend a school where these classes are offered.


One of the issues that impacts diversity is the fact that the education field itself is not very diverse. The U.S. Department of Education statistics from 2016 show that the teaching workforce is primarily white (84 percent) and female (also 84 percent). With the teacher shortage it becomes more important for us, as the music educators that our students see on a daily basis, to en- courage our students from all backgrounds to pursue a career in music education. While these circumstances present further barriers to achieving our goals regarding diversity and inclusion, WMEA continues to push forward actively identifying op- portunities to involve all Wisconsin music educators.
