WSMA News x Field Representative Update
Established in 1994, this program enables retired music educa- tors to share their time, knowledge and experience in support of Wisconsin Center for Music Education activities. Through this partnership, the retired music educators continue to serve and stay connected with their music education profession. They are an integral part of the services available to member schools, students and teachers.
Field representatives provide vital support in a variety of ways by assisting with projects including High School and Middle Level State Honors Project auditions, State Marching Band Championships, Wisconsin State Music Conference, volunteer opportunities and other WSMA, WMEA and WFSM activities.
The field representatives meet once a year in September at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education and discover op- portunities to renew friendships and volunteer for activities.
It is always a lively and focused discussion of events since the last meeting with the possibility of new proposals to be considered for the future.
The field reps provide support for the following:
Wisconsin State Music Conference • Exhibitor Assistance • Greeters • Registration • Exemplary Soloist Recital • WSMA Booth • WSMA Honors Jazz Ensemble

Wisconsin School Musician x 2018 Student Composition Project
Composition is included in the National Standards for Arts Edu- cation and is a natural extension of the creativity mode of music specified in Wisconsin’s music curriculum guide. The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages and recognizes the artistic efforts of Wisconsin student composers.
In this project, students submit original compositions, written descriptions and recordings to WSMA by January 5. A panel of Wisconsin composers evaluates the original works and students receive a written critique identifying strengths of the submis- sion as well as offering suggestions for improvement in future compositions. Awards are given based solely on merit with winners identified either in the High School or Middle School Division.
Students in grades 5–12 may enter in one or more of the follow- ing categories:
Instrumental Solo Instrumental Ensemble Instrumental Jazz Piano Solo Vocal Solo
Vocal Ensemble Vocal Jazz
Collaborative Solo Collaborative Ensemble
Results will be posted on the WSMA website in early March and the Awards Ceremony will be held at UW-Whitewater on April 7.
