2017 Wisconsin State Music Conference


The Wisconsin State Music Conference themed “Well-Rounded With Music” took place October 25-28 and had over 7,000 music educators, administrators, exhibi- tors, students and parents in attendance. The conference opened with a perfor- mance by Navy Band Great Lakes Wind Ensemble. Thursday morning started off with the President’s Welcome, which included a special keynote presentation by Wisconsin’s representative and finalist for National Teacher of the Year, Chris Gleason. WMEA President Lynn Seidl welcomed conference attendees, intro- duced the WMEA Board and Council, and presented WMEA awards. Award recipients this year are:


Richard G. Gaarder Award Clara McGowan, UW-Whitewater Anna Van Nuland, UW-Milwaukee


Melvin F. Pontius Creative Sparks in Music Education Award Anthony Cao, Madison


Community Service Award Rachel Deterding, Madison Richard Neuman, Richland Center


Michael G. George Distinguished Service Award


Tom Reifenberg, Greendale


Distinguished Administrator Award Margaret “Peggy” Larson, Winneconne

The conference continued with over 100 sessions which included excellent of- ferings conducted by Wisconsin music educators, industry representatives and honors conductors. Sessions provided a great education and insight in Educator Effectiveness, Literacy, Authentic Assess- ment, Technology, PDP Development, RtI, 1:1 Computing, and much more. In addition, there were many performances by groups that auditioned and were in- vited to perform for the conference, the WSMA Exemplary Soloist Recital given by students from around the state and the WSMA State Honors Music Project concerts.


The conference included great network- ing sessions for band, choir, orchestra and general music. This allowed time for music educators to share ideas and ask for
