“Practicing Inclu- sion” – I still remem- ber our think-tank discussion that led to the wording of this theme in our Publications Com- mittee meeting last January…
We knew it was time for a dedicated issue on the topic of inclusion, but also imag- ined our readers nodding at first glance as if to say, “Got that, already agree it’s important, tell us something new.” I have always been a less-is-more philosopher in the word camp, but I was all in on adding that one extra word to get our point across. And, not to oversimplify our A-Z process on getting there, but our brainstorm con- cluded that “Practicing Inclusion,” would actually (ironically) promote action over words.
So what does “Practicing Inclusion” mean to you in your classroom? I assume you already believe it’s vital to the mantra of “music for all,” but what more can you do to reach students of all types and abilities through music, including those not enrolled or engaged in music education?
Teaching beyond the notes is a forte of music educators with a relentless deter- mination to reach young people through music and make a lasting, positive impres- sion on their lives. The music classroom can be a melting pot for bringing students together in harmony, despite their differ- ences. From special teaching methods and curriculum/environment adjustments to ideas for recruitment and retention, this issue explores the unique factors of today’s diverse student body and how its many parts make a greater whole when we make a conscious effort to put action behind words and practice inclusion for real in the music classroom!
