Music Making for All Michael Hayden, WMEA State Chair, Technology
There are numer- ous pieces of mu- sic technology that make it possible for music creation to be accessible to all students, regardless of age or ability. In this section, I will focus on a few of the
more exciting music creation technologies that will help all students be creative, make music and have fun. Items range from stand-alone pieces of hardware, produc- tion software and iOS apps. Each has the potential for tremendous impact on the life of a child and help music, especially music creation, be more inclusive and accessible for all.
Launchpad by Novation
https://global.novationmusic.com/launch/ launchpad The music production company, Nova- tion, makes a great app called Launchpad This free iOS app comes pre-loaded with sounds in a variety of genres ranging from
hip hop to trance to dubstep. Sounds are quantized to line up with a built-in (and fixed) tempo grid so that a triggered sample will start playing at the beginning of a measure. The sound sample will continue to loop until you stop it (or your device runs out of battery power). Ad- ditionally, there are samples called “one shot” that play only when holding down the digital “trigger” pad. Students can even export songs to share via email or link up with social media. Novation additionally makes physical Launchpad devices. These relatively inexpensive trigger pads can be linked directly to your phone or tablet allowing students to experience the more tactile nature of pressing one of the 64 RGB trigger-pads.

them with the internet. And yes, it really does work with fruit. I have used this in class with students to create a piano out of tin foil. Imagine the delight of touching an apple and having a piano sound play. You can link up to Makey Makey website for custom sounds like banana bongos. Further, programs like Ableton Live allow you to control any sound with the Makey Makey device. Makey Makey has a great education website with links to classroom integration ideas and lessons.
