orchestra
student, of pieces being studied in the orchestra class.
• Pairing up students on a stand to facilitate the learning of the music for both students.
• Using peers is a great way to teach the bowings – pair up students.
• Using a metronome to help hear the tempo for the student that may be visually challenged.
• Using of Braille music (computer software may help for this).
• Listening to the music both as an orchestral piece and then just the individual part from the specific piece to guide learning.
• Plucking the string with a guitar pick instead of the use of the bow or adding a keyboard to your
ensemble (I have done this and it worked for the students). I have seen a violin strung the opposite direction to have the instrument sit on the student’s right shoulder in order to adjust for injuries from a car accident (it is easiest for the student to sit on the right hand side of the stand to see the music).
• Teaching your lesson with a micro- phone around your neck.
• Practicing your rehearsal tech- niques during a lesson or after school with the student alone. This may include practicing playing on the stage or just showing the stu- dent where he/she will be seated for the performance.
• For string instruments, taping on the fingerboard for fingers will
promote intonation, which many educators use for beginning stu- dents (why not at any time, even with a high school beginner?).
• Connecting with an occupational therapist to match the student with a string instrument that will be a good choice for that student.
Adjusting your teaching strategies to in- clude differing disabilities is something most of you are already doing in your classrooms. We just need to do it more so we promote musical success for each and every interested student that comes to us.
