middle level state honors music project
WSMA Middle Level State Honors Erica Ruppert, WSMA Program Director
October 27 and 28 marked the culmination of months of musical preparation by the Middle Level Honors Ensemble Students. Of the nearly 1,300 students that auditioned, 314 were selected to participate in the two-day event during the Wisconsin State Music Conference. The students who were chosen received their music in mid-July. After three months of individual practice and work with school music teachers and/or private instruc- tors, these students came together to prepare for the October 28 concerts with the full ensemble. Once again, the Performing Arts Center at Wau- nakee Community High School provided the audience members with a venue where they could easily see and hear the magnificent performances. This experience would not be possible without the dedicated volunteer assistance of music teachers from around the state. (See staff photos.)
The purpose of the Middle Level State Honors Music Project is to:
• Challenge musically talented Wisconsin students to share their dedication to a high level of musical performance.
• Provide opportunities for families, schools and communities to share pride in the efforts and accomplishments of their students.
• Offer models of leadership and excellence for music education and music performance.
In addition, the Middle Level State Honors Music Project benefits participating students, schools, school music programs, families and music teach- ers. Teachers, parents and private studio teachers are encouraged to register their middle level musi- cians to audition for this rewarding performance opportunity. Online registration opened December 15 and will close February 2. April auditions will be held in Appleton, Dousman (Kettle Moraine), Eau Claire, La Crosse, Sun Prairie and Wausau. Audition requirements, a project timeline and ad- ditional information can be found at wsmamusic. org/ml-honors.
Nationally recognized conductors Peter Haberman (band), John Trotter (choir) and Aviva Segall (or- chestra) will be leading the WSMA Middle Level State Honors ensembles for 2018.
